Duratracs Vibe/Noise

Hey yall. Got a set of duratracs with 70% tread left on them. Just put these tires on mounted and balanced great and love the look. I have them at about 39 psi and boy are they loud. I expected some noise and humming with the aggressive tread but I've had jeeps with MTs that weren't this loud. Most everybody on the forum says these tires are pretty quiet so I'm wondering what psi ppl who experience low road noise with these tires are running. BTW they are 265/75s in c load.

I run 265/75/16 in an E load at 40PSI. There is no abnormal tire noise and considering all, I think that they are much more quiet than MT's. This is my fourth set.

Mine make some noise but I'm used to it. I leave them at 33 most of the time.

I have same size/load as you, but run 35 psi. I hear noise, but it's not loud at all. Have you had an alignment after tire install? I hear the noise more when I'm rounding corners, thinking maybe you're hearing the noise because your alignment is off? Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the replies guys. I did get an alignment when I had them mounted and balanced. Sounds like I'm running similar tire pressure to everyone else. I was watching them balance the tires and after some weight they all seemed to balanced fine. Maybe I need to rebalance them still.

Only other thing I can think of is that since these tires were used the guy that had them before me didn't rotate which may be the reason for the vibes/road noise. They all look like they have even wear and lots of tread left which confuses me. I guess all I can do is try and rebalance and try rotating every 1000 miles.... :boom:

I hardly even hear mine, i keep them at about 45psi, although my last set of tires were BFG Mud Terrains.

Perhaps I'm even too high at 39 psi with the C load? Anyone know? I'll try airing down to 36 but cant see it making much of a difference. Especially since around 40 seems right around where these guys should be at.

I have C load and have mine at 37psi and they are a tad loud but I don't really notice it if I have the radio on.

Thanks [MENTION=3034]RonMAIDEN[/MENTION] , that seems to be about the perfect pressure for these tires in load C in our size! I think one tire has some uneven wear. The sides have a bit more tread then the center and is making that bogging noise. The guy who had them before me had them on a light 2 door wrangler and I suspect he had this one over inflated which wore out the center quicker then the sides. I dropped my pressure to 35psi all around in an effort to wear everything out evenly over the next 1000 miles. By then everything should be even and I can air back up to about 37psi with less noise.

On another note I looked into tire shaving. There are different methods and purposes but essentially you can have a shop stick the wheel & tire on a "tire lathe" and it'll trim the excess rubber off so the tread depth sits even therefore eliminating the issue of noise and/or vibration. My noise isn't that bad so I'm opting out of this and just trying my method first. There have been many different experiences regarding the art of Tire Shaving but many people swear by it. So if anyone as a serious issue with unevenly worn tires and is desperate this may be a viable option.

A poorly worn aggressive tire such as the duratrac can and will produce a lot more noise than it should, I have first hand experience with that!

What kind of wear contact are you guys seeing at 35-40 psi?

I have the same tires in load range c, and using a marker to make a line all the way across the tread, I found pretty even wear to be at about 32 psi up front. The line wore off evenly with the exception of the very outer 1/2 inch or so of tread.

Maybe I need to try mine at a higher psi and see if I am still achieving a good contact patch.

Have the Duratracs on my old Explorer (drove it for a while until I could get a 4Runner, it's up for sale now). Mine have about 9K miles or so on them, and they were quite a bit quieter when new than they are now. I run about 35 psi. That said, the Explorer is a little out of alignment - not terrible but a tad - so wearing slightly uneven and I'm sure that affects the noise level. Otherwise - great tires and nice look - been excellent on snow, ice, wet, offroad.
My gen3 T4R came with BFG 265/75R16 A/T KO's with like 80% plus tread on them and before the Duratracs I pretty much always had BFG's. Like them about equal but I'd have to say the BFG's have been a little quieter in my experience.

The BFG AT's are definitely quieter. That's what I have on my explorer and the wife's Yukon XL. But the Duratracs are just simply bad ass on the 4Runner!!!
