Really like the drawers. I'd have to agree, they show some skill even if they are done at the expense of some scrap lumber lying around. I'm planning my drawer system to start in the next couple of months and like what you did with the top access, both in front, and the hidey hole in the back. It looks really good! Some questions...

1)With it under the stock toyota shelf it seems like that back part is inaccessible unless you completely remove the drawers? Or am I missing something
2) Why'd you keep/design around keeping the stock toyota shelf?
3) where did you get the netting/webbing separating the trunk with the 2nd row?

1) You are correct. With the shelf down, you cannot access the back cubby. Even with the drawers removed, that portion of the box not accessible. I designed that are for longer items that I rarely need access to, such as my golf umbrella, disc golf stool, jumper cables, ice scrapper, etc.
I do need to unlatch the double decker shelf and left it up to gain access to that cubby. But, I rarely have anything in the back of my vehicle, so its not as much of a hassle as it sounds like.
2) My first thought was that I didn't want to remove and store the shelf. So, I started looking at building a box that fits underneath it and works in conjunction with the shelf. After taking the measurements, it seemed like a natural for what I needed and provided enough room for everything I need to carry around.

I was thinking I'd ditch the shelf mainly because i dislike the gap between the ledge and the liftgate. Whenever I put anything on top, it rolls off. I know the drawers will be underneath to catch it, but I wasn't sure what I'd gain by keeping it in there. I will say though that as a student living in an apartment not having to store it would be nice.

Would you buy the raingler again? The fiance has placed a dog pretty high up on the list, so I thought it would be a great storage device and double as a dog seat jumping prevention device!

Really nice build thread too.

The box actually extends all teh way to the tailgate, so things don't really fall off the shelf, unless they fall behind the wheel well on either side of the box.

I guess I would buy it again, just because it is the best/cheapest option for a barrier between the cargo area and seats. I bought it because I now have an 11 month old son with a rear facing car seat. In the event of a collision, anything in the back becomes a projectile and I wanted something to catch these projectiles before they have a chance to get to him.
It is a necessary evil in my mind because it is a pain in the ass anytime you want to put the seats down or transport anything like full length pvc pipes, 2x4's, etc. Not that I do that all the time, but it is a hassle when I have to. I think the new version should be easier to deal with than the one I got. My model is the FJBN (I think) which was actually designed for the FJ, but also works for the 4Runner, with a little ingenuity

Freaking expensive net. But it looks good. I'm also trying to find one to protect my 7 month old. I was hoping to spend half of that, but this might be the best option.

Look at the middle attachments on that 4Runner net. You'll have to install (drill) those handle looking things in the plastic, which don't look like they can be removed without taking the screws out. Not my idea of a good design. But, if you don't mind the installation being permanent, I guess it's no big deal.

As far as price, I think their craftsmanship is worth what they charge.

Lastly, I'm happy to answer more questions about the net, but I'd prefer to do it in my build thread or via PM instead of the cargo drawer thread.

Odd question how much beer could be fit inside the cubbies? Like 24 packs? I know it's an odd question just curious cause right now I just throw it in a duffle bag and go with it
 
I'm in Paducah KY, it's pretty much the half way point between STL and Nashville. I'd happily pay you for that box or another one like it, and I'd get you some Yuengling for being so kind. I'm a cyclist and I head up to O'Fallon pretty often to visit The Bike Surgeon, love those guys.

Just out of curiosity, what are you guys thinking would be a fair price for these drawers? I hadn't considered selling them before, but it seems like my needs are ever changing & I'm not sure if I really need them anymore. Feel free to shoot me a PM or post it here.

I'm interested for sure. I don't know where to begin on fair price because I have no idea what it cost you time/material-wise. I will tell you that I will be in StL the weekend of May 31 for a wedding, as well as the weekend of June 13th for a concert and would be interested in placing an order if you're going to start slinging these!
 
Sweet build! I'm totally stealing your design... :) My cargo drawer build has stalled because I wasn't sure what I really wanted. Thanks for Giving me an idea.

For a 3.0, or anyone else going to build. I'd bet 1/2" ply would give you a good strength to weight ratio vs. MDF. I was going to say 3/4 ply (baltic birch for a nicer finish) but that might be kinda heavy too, but good and strong.

Question: I don't have the double decker cargo stuff. Mine has a slight "ramp" in the cargo floor near the back of the rear seats, so that the front edge is higher than the rear (meaning at the rear door). Does your have this or is it dead flat? I think it might have something to do with the mech. for folding the rear seats. Just haven't really inspected it yet. Not that I can do anything about it..

I already have rough cut 2 side panels and monky'd an ugly taper with my T-bevel and crappy jigsaw. It seems to work based on a quick check fit. Just did think about redoing them and making the bottom edges at the front/hidden cubby stepped up with a relief cut to account for the "ramp."

I loved the mention about a diaper changing station! How many young bucks on here have no clue about that?! Hahaha. How many times have you gotten poop under your fingernails when the baby decides to squirm while getting changed? Oh the things I never knew I'd have to deal with one day..... I love the little ones right now and they are really cuddly and stuff, but MAN I'll be happy when they are all potty trained!

Hey Bob,

Sorry for the delayed response. I wasn't ignoring you, I'm just not on here very often anymore due to work and the little guy. He is a ton of fun, and even more work.

Anyway, to answer your question, my cargo area is dead flat. I don't have the 3rd row option though. I'm sure with a little pencil work you can figure out the pitch and cut accordingly.

To those of you that are interested in buying this set of drawers (not having me make another set and buying that, this exact set) let me know. It looks like plans/life is changing more and more every day and I just don't think I have a need for the drawer system at this time. I'd love to see them go to a good home.
