Yeah yeah I know, not another tire thread right? Sorry but I have been having some search issues the last few days (and doing it from my phone is worse). When I search "E rated" I just get everything with rated and an E in it and using google I'm only coming up with 3rd and 5th gens which are different beasts than the 4ths altogether. It seems like a lot of 5th gen guys think they're fine but most of the 3rd gen guys think they're crazy bouncy and over weight.

So you guys that are running or have ran E rated trires, on your 4th gen, what do you think about them? vs. P-metric or C-rated?

I'm in the market for different trires because I'm not particularly happy with the Dueler AT RHSs I got with my new 18" wheels and one of them has already been ruined by a puncture.

I wanna stick with 31.5" (265/60 or 285/60) because I like the ride height now so the choice is very limited (although 265/70 and 275/65 have a ton of options). The only ones out there I like are

Falken Wild Peaks 265/65R18 or 285/60R18
Nitto Dune Grappler 285/60 (pretty much eliminated this one, but here it is anyway)
BFG Rugged Terrains 265/65
BFG AT KO 265/65

The WPs, DGs, and RTs are all P rated, which I don't like, but the AT is E rated and the AT is a lot more $$... Actually more $$ than a 275/65 BFG AT and about the same price as a 285, but that's not the point here.

P.S. I'm probably going to ignore all advice and get the BFG ATs but I wanted to get some input anyway. See if you guys would make me second guess myself.

edit- yeah I misspelled it, tired of seeing the ad links.

P metric....
/end thread

Thanks for the input Zach, but I'm asking guys who've ran E rated LT trires (misspelled to keep it from being an ad) on the weight of the 4th gen, not just P-metric like you.

Girly tires for girly guys......

A good comparison for me is when Justin ran his e rated duratracs on his 4runner. In my opinion it rode like a dump truck. Too bad you couldn't try them both out with your setup somehow. It wouldn't take too much work to slap some wheels on there with e rated tires and go for a drive. Have any buddies with yota's and e rated tires close by?

Nah, I wish it was that simple... 99% of my friends are full size guys, or not car people and driving something else. My chevy has had D or E rated for as long as I can remember and it never bothered me, but that's a much more beat up, rough, heavy truck anyway. The only other guys I know with Toyotas are in the off road club and running meats WAY too big to fit.

Do you know how much Justin's were inflated? Because I've read that it makes a huge difference in E-rated. And the BFG ATs I had were C rated and it didn't bother me.

edit- didn't he also just have a spacer lift on old xreas? That would've ridden worse than yours anyway.

I am running thr gy wrangler silent armor; the pro grade which is e-rated. I think they are great. Very smooth, quiet and a decent compromise between on/off road. I need the e rating to tow horse trailer if pick up has problems. The 4runner is dd and drives great.

They come in the size you're looking for but I'm running 265/75/16

Hope that's helpful, jon

He ran 40 pounds I think? Which is exactly what I run in my terra grapplers. Lift wise he ran fj trail team stuff with the ds 2.5/1.5 and airlift 1000's in the back which is exactly what I ran before I got my ome stuff. The only variable between our lifts then would've been the psi he ran in the airbags. I know that's not a definitive answer but it's better than nothing.

The reason i went p-metric was that I ran e rated tires on my z-71 and the 4runner weighs quite a bit less than the silverado did. I think it's a good tire or our 4runners.

I haven't had E's on my t4r but had them on my 2002 explorer for about a week - about the same weight. They were bfg t/a - tire store messed up and got E instead of D which I had run before. I could definitly tell the difference on rough highway sections. D's are reallitivily stiff but the E's were over the top for ride. I would not recommend E's for a vehicle that is your everyday driver.

I went thru this a few weeks ago. After some research and talking to a friend who has had BFG at "E" on his wifes Xterra for over a year now I went w/them. I did put them on my 3rd gen, and before winter will have another set of BFG at load e's put on my 4th gen. Take a look at the new FJ cruiser w/the TRD package, they come from the factory with 265/75-16 BFG at load e's. I feel that it is all about the air pressure you run. If you run them in the 35-40psi range the ride is pretty good IMO. Good luck w/your choice-

Thanks for the responses guys, yes I've read that a lot of places automatically inflate them to 50-60 PSI because they can hold that much but lowering them to 35-40 will make them ride much better.

So far it looks like most people are picking the BFG but I was hoping to get a little more input before pulling the trigger.

the only tire you have in the options that is worth a darn is the BFG so another vote for them. if you ever plan on towing or carrying a large payload please put LT tires on your truck, they dont have to be E load range if you dont want cuz that is probably overkill for you. but i have seen too many of my friends with pick up trucks try to get away with running P tires and seen many violent blow outs while towing.

Thanks for the response, but those are my only decent AT options out there for that size.

The AT KO in that size is E rated, and is one of only a few LTs available in 31.5" for 18" wheels. The others are all e rated as well (michelin ltx at2, gysa, & grabber at2).

the michelin LTX is far from an all terrain tire IMO. but theyre pretty good street tire, i ran them on my dodge 2500 until they were down to the cords. the only problem i had was broken belts on my rear tires, that was probably my fault but michelin replaced them for me for free.

Re-reading the initial post - it is my opinion that the BFG T/A KOs are the best all around tire around. I have ran them for many years in the past and there traction and performance is just short of off road tires. I typically got 60,000 miles and replaced with about 6/32 left - 5 sets total on 2 vehicles.

I'm curious to see what you think of your tires if you happen to go with the BFG's, once I get my spacer lift in I'll be shopping for tires, I have 18's as well and I like the BFG's but my 4Runner is a DD and I like to keep a nice smooth ride.

Terra Grapplers are nice too just not sure of the sizes

Yeah I had 36K and 3/4 tread left on my other BFGs when I sold them, should've never done it. I know they'll last, people say the Duratracs are just as good and I'd like to try them but they don't make the size I need. And contrary to what everyone says, it seems to like the DTs are louder based on trucks I've rode beside in traffic.

I'll be sure and post up my impressions! I will try to remember to post in this thread but it may just be in my build. I can tell you from going to the LT C rated ATs that it's not going to be as nice and smooth as your P265/60s but those weren't bad to me. I'm also used to mud tires so it may just be me though.

Oh yeah, I ordered the AT KOs at my local store and they should be on tomorrow evening.

The poll ends tomorrow but it looks like a landslide BFG AT victory. Not that it matters because I ordered the BFGs the day after posting this.

Got em put on a few minutes ago

On the ride home they felt about the same as my other BFGs (C rated) but I'll post another update after I get some highway miles on.

just more money to throw at my rig....on second thought mind shooting me a PM with pics of where it mounts? i'm pretty handy with a welder and i can probably make my own with some DOM tube i have laying around.
