E7008 Head unit in 2003 4runner?

I am reminded why I rarely buy things on eBay, which is where I bought the e7008.

First of all Cookieroe you were right. When I got the map DVD in the unit, it initiated the startup sequence and the radio and Nav came on.

The problem was getting the DVD in the unit. The door did not want to open. Eventually after plugging in and unplugging the unit a bunch of times, it opened and I put the DVD in. But when I tried to get it back out...it would not open again. And for a split second a cd popped out of the cd slot and then went back in.

Now the unit was telling me there were 3 cds loaded and I never put anything in that slot. I unplugged the unit, pried the door open, and grabbed the edge of the cd and pulled it out. Completely scratched up cd.

Plugged it all back in. No dice in getting the other two out. Unit just whirred and whirred. Map DVD would not come out either. So I took the top panel off and yup, two CDs stuck in there, but I could not get the unit to spit them out.

Definitely not a properly working head unit. Back to my old motto, don't buy from eBay unless there is no other choice.

My choice is now aftermarket. But it was good to confirm that if you get a working e7008 the radio, Nav, and CD will work in a 2003 T4R with JBL with Nav.

bitter sweat to see your results. Sorry to see that it is defective. Here is an option: $340 to repair it. Seeing how these units are uber-expensive on fleabay, I think you can make out.

When you got the NAV, did you try to get a refund from the buyer? I'd open a case against them.

I get a lot from fleabay, and yes, it's hit and miss, but it's not all bad.

I know this post is very old, But this schematic always pops up in my search so I figured I would give it a shot, I am trying to find a pinout for Toyota Part #: 86790-35021 a radio very similar to these but different. I am trying to retain the use of my factory backup cam. After installing an aftermarket pioneer headunit.
 
I'm in the same position- trying to put an E7005 into a 2003 Limited. If I can't find a bezel that will fit at a salvage yard I was considering 3D printing a custom bezel to fit, since I have access to one. I don't guess anyone has done anything like this but if they have I'd love to see the results.

I've put a E7005 into a 2005, i didn't go the bezel route and it doesn't look as bad as some make it out to be. The only thing is issue with is the voice nav needed an separate small amp and speaker to get working as the the JBL amp didn't have the voice outputs.
 
So it was totally plug and play excluding voice nav? (I don't really need that as I have aftermarket bluetooth already) Thanks!

Yes, everything was smooth but we got stuck on the Voice thing for ever until i did further research and found out you needed a specific AMP model number that supports the voice.

Also pro tip:

To access the Diagnostic Menu (works with the truck on or off):
Turn the headlights off
Turn the NAV unit on
Hold down the Info button while performing steps 4 through 9
Turn the parking lights on
Turn the parking lights off
Turn the parking lights on
Turn the parking lights off
Turn the parking lights on
Turn the parking lights off

that part number is to the OEM camera. Very tough to find on fleabay. Very expensive, I don't recommend getting it. I scored one a few years ago, still in the box it came with, LOL. I have a pinout (close to it) of the camera, let me find it.

All you have to do is find a bezel that is from an SR5/Limited that came with a "regular" CD radio. (nonJBL)

If memory serves: almost all NAVs are JBL so if you are plug&playing your NAV into 2005, the voice WILL WORK, you just have to 1) have the pinouts to your NAV and your JBL amp and "plug" the corresponding wires into the corresponding pins to the amp. This is documented on one of the NAV threads, so it will work.

Not correct there are two different versions on the JBL amp, 4runners without factory NAV do not have the JBL AMP w/ voice navigation capability. Trust me we worked on this for HOURS LOL.

Not 100% clear on what you said.

There are 2 different types of JBL amps. One with the "regular CD radio" and the other with the factory NAV (in the 4Runner, it's the E7005 from 2003-2004, and the E7008 from 2005 to 2009). For the amp that doesn't come with the NAV, you CAN wire it so the voice nav / bluetooth phone call goes through the driver's side speaker. It's been done. I haven't wired mine yet. The "how to" can be found in either of the 2 threads below.

If you DON'T have any JBL amp, then the factory NAV (that requires JBL) will NOT work. Period. Major note: There are OEM NAVs that do not require the JBL amp. They can be found on the thread I made years ago:

Some reading on how to wire from HU to amp (I believe there are 3 wires, 2 of which are spliced into one of the wire harnesses of the amp). I can't remember details, but they are in either/both of the following threads:

ALL OF THESE members do have successfully managed to have their voice nav/phone call over the speaker work.

I just went through the exact same process on my '05 Ltd. with the 6-disc, 10 speaker JBL set up (actually, I used an '05 OEM head unit as the '06's seem unobtainable on the aftermarket) - a few issues that may come up:

(1) Your '06 may or may not have a JBL amp that supports the analog voice signals from the OEM Nav unit - the only way to know for sure is open up the panel in the right rear cargo compartment and check the part # of the amp - if it's an 86280-0W150, it does not support the Nav voice signals; if it's an 86280-0W340, it does - if it's some other number, your guess is as good as mine. Toyota seems to have randomly traded off amps in '05 and '06.

(2) If your stock amp does not support the voice commands, all is not lost - you can add a secondary amplified speaker for just the voice guidance - for example, the RadioShack 21-541A will do the trick and can be located under the seat or under the dash (a lot easier if you remove the speaker from its enclosure). NOTE: the Nav unit can not drive an external speaker w/o an amplifier.

(3) If you can get a Nav-ready JBL amp from a 4Runner (i.e. the above 340 part #) it will fit in your truck w/o modification, but you might loose operation of the two upper rear speakers making yours a 10 speaker system. You could trade out your amp w/ a JBL Nav-ready unit from another Toyota model (almost any JBL unit will work, but the sound won't be as good - the amps equalization are tailored to each model, e.g. Seqouia unit won't sound quite right in a 4Runner).

(4) Even if your amp is Nav-ready, you'll need to run a shielded twisted-pair from the head unit back to the amp and you'll need pin inserts for the 20-pin connector on the Nav and the 24 pin connector on the Amp - you can get the pins from Toyota, but they get about $20 each (you'll need 5) for them in the parts department - if you make friend w/ someone in the service department they may give them to you (they have a connector repair kit).

(5) You'll need to hook up the speed, reverse, and parking brake signals to the Nav and get one of the 5 pin connectors that mate w/ the Nav (the connector shell is about $11 from Toyota - the pins are best "gifted" from the service dept.)

(6) The Nav unit will fit in your dash, using the same brackets as the 6-disc unit, but you'll have some unsightly gaps around the edges since the factory OEM center dash trim piece is different for the Nav and 6-disc units. There's a post on this site about making yoru own filler for that gap, or if you're lucky, you can swap dash trim w/ someone that has an '03 to '05 4Runner that wants to upgrade from the single CD unit to the changer. If you're rich, you can buy the parts from Toyota - the dash trim piece is about $400 and you also need to swap out the A/C control assy at $800 (only the bezel needs to be changed on the A/C assy, but Toyota doesn't sell that part - only the whole assy with the circuit board, display, etc.).
