easiest disablement of back window? Fuses?

In just a year of ownership, I've had multiple occurrences of going out to my truck, and finding the back window is down. It's parked outside, so this is Not Good. I've gotten better at checking when I get out, but I've never caught it in the act of happening.

An accidental touch on the dash? The only control near that window switch is for 4wd, which I do happen to use every time I park at home, backing uphill on a dirt driveway. But I don't think that's it -- more likely would be unknowingly pressing on the remote fob.

Regardless, the last straw is that, twice in recent weeks, unintentional lowering has forcibly removed an expensive rear dash-cam mounted on the window. Not damaged -- yet. Mounting it there is "only temporary", until I get around to fabbing a permanent mount on the headliner. And even without the camera issue, I don't want weather or critters or thieves getting in.

I posted a question months ago about having an open-window alert (like the open-door alerts), but never got a response. So now I'd like to just disable the damn thing -- without modding the switch mechanism. The manual says fuse "39. ECU−IG 10 A: Shift lock control system, power windows..." and a bunch of other stuff, so that's out. Next best is fuse "56. POWER 30 A: Power windows, electric moon roof", and nothing else. It's not specific to the back window, but I could live with it.

Does anyone know of an aftermarket piggy-back-style fuse controlled by a cord with an on/off switch (like the in-line switches on some household lamps)?

Did the previous owner access the computer with Carista? With the 5th Gen's it's possible to use Carista to auto down some or all of the windows with the keyfob. It's some combo of keyfob commands.

Not directly answering your question, but this was happening to me too. Turns out the culprit was my...key fob. The button for the rear window was being pressed when I had it in my pocket. Whoops. Now I'm a little more mindful about where I set my keys and it hasn't happened since!

That is an easy way to do it, however, you will lose the ability to put it down if you ever want/need to, such as if you were needing to haul long boards, or something that would need to protrude through the gate. I also leave it open on job sites occasionally to make accessing tools easier without having to open and close the entire gate dozens of times throughout the day. I have had the same thing as you and others mentioned about accidentally hitting the remote button, so my thought was to take the fob apart and disable just that button. I haven’t done it yet, but it would be fairly simple to cut a short round bushing, or something to go around the actual switch under the outer push button to make it so it doesn’t press. Honestly, I think it would solve your problem, and it should be WAY easier than taking apart the rear door anyway. Plus side is that you’ll still have full functionality if you ever need it. To me, the remote button sucks anyway since it won’t allow you to put it back up without getting in and using the dash button anyway.

you are accidentally hitting the key fob button while its in you pocket most likely. thats the stupidest idea they ever had to make that function work with the key fob unless it auto rolls up when you lock the truck

you need it hooked up for power to be able to open the rear hatch so the only way i know of to disable it is to pull the back panel off and unplug the window motor

pry open the fob, remove the inner rubber button /presser....boom you have disabled the remote from accidentally lowering the back window

I have had the same happen to me several times, it is the key fob in my pocket that does it.

I would agree with the quotes below and disable the window button on the fob so you retain the window function when needed!

That'll be the easiest way to do it. If you want to get fancy with it, you can add a switch to the power wire for the motor and it'll act as follows:

Switch in "off" position: Rear motor disabled and unable to go up/down
Switch in "on" position: Rear motor has power and acts as normal, including accidental key fob presses.

Essentially you'll cut the power wire to the motor and route it through the switch first, and the switch will feed back to the motor. That way if you ever want to use the rear window you can just flip the switch instead of removing the whole panel to plug the motor back in.

You'll lose the ability to re-initialize the tailgate features if the tailgate window is disabled.

Mod the fob to disable the button or just get a new fob, there's a thread on here with links to an ebay seller for $40, just have to get it cut and you can program it yourself.

Simply push the window lock button on the drivers door. It won’t move with dash switch when it’s on.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was really hoping that something this simple would work. It didn't. Holding down the fob button had exactly the same effect before and after engaging "lock all windows".

You'll lose the ability to re-initialize the tailgate features if the tailgate window is disabled.

And they'll be permanently lost, even after re-connecting it? What happens to the features if the battery is disconnected and reconnected?

When the battery is disconnected, the tailgate functions like defroster, wiper and washer fluid won’t work until the system is re-initialized by completing a full cycle of the tailgate window all the way down and then all the way back up.

These features won’t be lost forever, they just won’t work until the process is completed.

Disabling the window motor would only be a short term solution until you figure out the real problem.
