Easy Pin-stripe removal..how I did it.

I decided for certain last week that my pin stripes had to go. I'm going to try to do a quick write up on what I did to get them off. This is the first write up I've done on a project so be gentle on me. :yield:

Its a lot cheeper than the 3M product. Some of the reviews says it wears out much quicker. I can't comment there since I've never used the other product. This one did last long enough to get my stripes off but its pretty much done.

Here's what I started with:


I didn't take a picture of the wheel chucked up in the drill but I think you can probably figure that part out. You'll most likely want a corded drill for this. I don't see a cordless lasting long enough without recharging. Not mine anyway.

I started on the driver side and went front to back. Then did the same on the passenger side. Looking back I should have started front to back on passenger side then back to front on the driver side as the passenger side went MUCH faster.

This thing makes a huge mess. Definitely don't want to be indoors doing this




Took me a total of about 45 min to get this done. The second side was probably like 10 min top compared to my first side that took longer as I was getting used to what I was doing.

So I ended up looking like this after rinsing all the little rubber pieces off. You can see there's a lot of residue left behind from the rubber and adhesive. The paint gets warm but not nearly as hot as it would sitting in the sun in TX in August.




I ran out of daylight before I got finished. From here I plan to clean the residue off with goo gone, wash, clay bar, polish, and wax. I plan to get that all done this weekend and I'll post up a finished product picture.

Always used a heat gun to loosen the adhesive and pull off emblems and pin stripping. This was on newer vehicles though. Not sure if time makes a difference.

Looks much better without the stripping.

Very nice, in the auto body industry we've been using the "eraser" wheels for years. I would caution people not to try to use those wheels on a standard die grinder, too much speed and they fall apart, violently. You can also clean up with 3M adhesive remover 38983. And by the way, they ALL wear out quickly.

Very nice, in the auto body industry we've been using the "eraser" wheels for years. I would caution people not to try to use those wheels on a standard die grinder, too much speed and they fall apart, violently. You can also clean up with 3M adhesive remover 38983. And by the way, they ALL wear out quickly.

Yea it says to stay between 500 and 4000 rpms with the eraser.

I only got the driver side done today but here's a quick shot of it. When I finish tomorrow I'm gonna get some better shots in the sun.
