Ebay 5vz-fe Turbo

I believe with the supercharger, since its from TRD especially, they designed it so it would not exceed the MAF sensor.

There are interesting articles from the TRD folks themselves saying that they are not pleased with the supercharger and its performance, and its part of the reason that the TRD 7th injector kit exists.

well trd did copy gadgets fmu with the hose from the intake to the fpr. and I read somewhere trd claimed it was them who thought of it.

anywho some people get by with just the s/c and no fuel mods.

one thing we all can agree upon is that we on t4r are mod freaks so you go get that turbo on 7psi. ill bet in a few months your going to want more boost. so your gonna need fuel upgrades amd a tune anyway lol

This is so true, you always want more boost. Its a huge problem and addiction. Its why I sold all my turbo vehicles and staying away for a bit.

My truck has been SCed for the past 3 years and 40k miles. Manual trans, URD 2.2 pulley giving it 7-8psi, No fuel upgrades other than a boost enrichment module which isn't really a fuel upgrade.

No problems. Doesn't knock or ping under load and does not lean out at high RPM. I am sure i could get more power out of it with the 7th injector but it is by no means required.

My altitude probably makes a little difference but i doubt it would run much differently at sea level.

Elevation makes a massive difference. 4,000+ feet in elevation is the ONLY place I could drive mine without worrying about ping and lean-out. I absolutely had to buy the URD upgrade kit both for the timing retard and the additional fuel at higher loads. Turbos have the added difficulty of the boost coming in all of a sudden, causing a huge amount of ping before the knock sensors can react and retard timing. A turbo just isn't going to work very well without tuning.

No need for tune but is always beneficial. If the maf sensor can handle the amount of air flow being pulled in by the "lets call it a pump" then the ecu will know to add more fuel, preventing running lean. As soon as you exceed the maf sensor capacity of flow then you need a tune/piggyback/stand alone.

Since the stock truck can handle a trd supercharger than it makes sense that the maf can go beyond the flow of the stock motor so no tune is required for an "air pump".

Also worth noting, you can only do so much with the maf to "trick" the ecu into adding more fuel, eventually you max the injector duty cycle and run out of fuel pressure.

Very well put :)

The stock fuel system can't handle it, that's why there are aftermarket parts to support the TRD Supercharger. Look at this spreadsheet:

What you see is the number of milliseconds that the 7th injector is adding fuel on top of the stock fuel system's capabilities. This is the base tune provided by URD and the amount of fuel needed to get MOST 5VZ trucks to run safely without going lean. Fuel is added as low as 4 psi and 3,000 RPMs. Why? Because additional fueling is needed when you add boost. If you're over 5,000 ft in elevation you may not need it because 6.5 psi at sealevel is only 4 psi at 5000 ft (the point at which the 5VZ starts needing fuel).

That's not true at all.

Runnng the same low PSI, I'll take a turbo that's running in its efficiency range on the compressor map any day over a roots blower that adds additional load (a contributor to pinging) and high IATs.

So i've read everyone saying how you need tuning, ect, ect. But i've heard very little on any companies that do it, or where to have it done? It's been mentioned that it's difficult, but does that make it impossible?

If clownmeat's truck were a manual, he would likely be experiencing low RPM ping. But since he's got a torque converter that wont happen.
And just cause you can run it that way, does not mean it's the safest or most proper way to do it. I'm not calling CM a liar, but MANY people don't post what "actually happens" online because they are ashamed of their mistakes, myself included.
TRD blowers do require a tune for proper efficiency, power and LONGEVITY. Why else would TRD come out with a 7th injector bandaid a few years after the release of the blower?
The only reason 5vz's are staying together is because of the stout construction. If they were 95% of motors out there, they would have grenaded years ago.

P.S. It's not very nice telling people to GTFO, this ain't your house.

First off I made my truck manually shifted via paddles. I can leave from a stop in overdrive and there is no detonation at 7psi. I used a colder spark plug and run premium fuel, that's it. Maybe it's not the safest or proper way, but at my elevation and what I did works just fine, on the other hand I spent over $1000 on the Honda CRX engine management to make it right. Lastly what "actually happens" is that it has performed awesome for over two years now.

2 years and no dyno runs yet.

If you can start in any gear, a nice 3rd gear pull will tell a lot on the dyno.

Pretty sure I read in Clownmeat's build thread there aren't any dynos close to him. Believe he also has a race car too that he hasn't dyno'd. I know his design has been duplicated by a few others on this board, but I haven't seen any dyno runs from them either.

On another note, some of my parts to mount the turbo came in this weekend to start fabbing my own setup. Should have a 44mm Tial wastegate coming this week as well. :D Now I just gotta find out what the hell I did with my Drimmel, I can't find that damn thing anywhere

You just said a magic word - elevation.

Where are you at?

Forgot to add that besides being at a low elevation my low intake air temps help too. Don't know about underhood turbos on these, but the supercharged ones sometimes run over 200 degree intake temps. Here are mine.

Going to bump this back to the top.

I decided I wanted to give these manifolds a shot, so I went to order them yesterday, but apparently they're out of stock. 2 weeks at least until they get more.

While I was on the phone with the guy, I mentioned putting these manifolds and downpipe on my 4Runner. He said it wouldn't work. All he knew was that his "R&D department" had tried it, and that there were clearance issues with the 4Runner. He didn't know anything more beyond that. My plan is to fabricate my own intake (non-intercooled, low boost), so why wouldn't the manifolds fit? What's different about the 4Runner engine bay compared to the Tacoma?

Ok, to follow up with this, I talked to Ace at CXRacing, who is apparently the only competent person there. As far as the manifolds and crosspipe fitting, he seemed certain there would be no issues there. He did express concern about the downpipe not tying into the stock exhaust, but to me that's no big deal, I plan on reworking it anyways. I'm going to order as soon as they have them back in stock.
