I had some minor rust spots on my crossbars, but nothing like that on the black oxide nuts. I think mine were stainless/black oxide?
Anyway, for the cross bars i took a foam paint brush and applied 2 coats of a rust converter, following all instructions on the bottle.
I let that set for 48 hours then applied a coat of POR-15 (45904) Top Coat Chassis Black - 1 Quart. to the crossbars.
This was about 2 months ago and they look great.
I think this may be a year to 2 year process that will have to be repeated to ward off rust. I also live by the Ocean and have NY winters to deal with.

Wow, that looks awful. Where did you get those nuts from? I purchased and installed a set Black Oxide Stainless from Albany County Fasteners back in July and have no rusting issues with them. It has also rained here numerous times since then and I've driven on the beach several times as well.
The only rusting issues I have are on the rack itself with the poor powder coating. I'll probably get the rack powder coated again next spring or do what [MENTION=153057]lbaschi1[/MENTION] with his.

Sorry to see that. I bought my screws/hardware from Albany County Fasteners and mine have been installed now about 7 months.
Mine are Stainless Steel Black Oxide. My vehicle spends 9 hours, 5 days each week parked outside at work in hot weather, wind, dust storms, and rain. That looks like damage from fog, and ocean salt. I do have a few places on my washers where the black oxide worn off a little to the stainless but no rust. As for my roof rack, a few thin scratches, and my ladder came with a little rust on my top mount bracket. When I looked at your photo, I went out and gave it all a look over and snapped a couple off photos. I do wash and wax my vehicle once each week at a brushless/no pads, water jet car wash.

Black oxide is a plain bolt. Has zero protective coating at all.

Did you ever check your MPG with the rack? Curious what everyone's mpg loss is with the rack unloaded.

So to credit ecotechne, they did send me a second rack the I received in a little over a week through DHL. The packaging seemed a little small. Looks like they came up with a version 3? I don't remember seeing pictures of a 2 piece side rails. I can't speak to the engineering mechanics but I would assume this version wouldn't be as rigid or strong. Someone could enlighten me to if this would be the case. I assume they did this due to shipping restrictions set by DHL. I'm in batch 10 and again just want to share my story. There was also the shipping and handling damage to the powder coat. But I assumed that would be the case.

The two piece sides may be a nice surprise. It may make it easier to line-up / set the front clearances. With the 3 bolts securing the pieces together and each piece being attached to the roof mounts, I don't think strength will be an issue. My only advice is to replace all the hardware before you install it. The hardware they send is not very good and the washers don't fit the bolts as they should. Cant wait to see pics of this install.

Hard to say, added the tires, wheels and lift too soon to really see the hit.
Average is 16.1-16.3 mpg 95% highway.

I'm still getting used to the different look. At first glance I like it. Definitely needs a light bar though!
A couple things I noticed, from my earlier post I mentioned that both side pieces are not a two piece. So zoom in if you wonder how they line up. I couldn't tell if powder coating was a little caked on or maybe the holes didn't get drilled out enough but 4 of the 6 holes wouldn't allow for bolts to freely move through. I was thinking about drilling out but then I tried to see what happened if I threaded it through... and it worked. I hand tightened and left most bolts loose during assembly except for the mounting brackets and the 2 piece side rails. All seemed to bolt up and tighten town fine.
Overall I'm happy with the product. Powder coating during shipping got a little marked up. I also appreciate the effort ecotechne put into making another batch with the two piece to ship. Only wish we would have stayed informed of this and not left in the dark. Anyways here are some pics. Please post yours up when you get installed!!

V1 Rack for Free
Hey guys, I’ve got a V1 Rack that was installed for a few weeks. While solid and probably useful with some customization, I ended up taking it off and going with a Gobi. It was a solid Rack...just wouldn’t work for my needs. This one has been in my garage since July and I need it gone. With that said, I’ll let it go for free. The only caveat is....pick up will be in Clovis, NM. I will not ship it. I’ve got all the hardware that came with the Rack and it’s in great condition though there are a few powder coat chips from shipping . PM me if interested...I’ll throw it on the main forum page if I get no takers here.
