ECT Power Button

Hi Folks-

I recently purchased a 98' 4Runner and also own a 02' Tacoma. I love Toyotas. I have had the 4Runner one month and have not experienced a single problem until yesterday. I live in the mountains and communte 45 minutes each wat to work. Coming come is all uphill. It was Friday with lots of trafiic so I engaged the ECT button to give me ore power while passing. This was fine for quite some time. The last pass I made in the passing lane my RPMs went up to close to 5000 before the truck finally shifted. It shifted and as I went into the next corner the truck stalled and all the lights on the consolecame on. That is check engine, abs, brake, etc., etc.

So I pulled over and attempted to restart the truck which it did, but died shortly after. I did this a few more times and it kept dying. Finally I disengaged the ECT button and the truck started right up without dying. I presumed to drive 25 miles home without a single problem.

My question is, is it possible that the ECT caused this problem or could it be something else. I know the ECT messes with the fuel intake and RPM in order to trick the transmission. Any advice or comments on this subject of mine are much appreciated. Thank you.

i second this question as i had my ect power on the other day and floored it to get into traffic on the highway and my 4runner cut off(all power) at 70 MPH, as soon as i let off the gas. I shifted into N and restarted it while i was still going pretty fast and everything was fine.

This has happened before and i find that when im thinking about it, i will try and prevent it but after flooring, i will let off the gas slower than just all at once so the RPMs come down gradually and it lets it set back into a normal range of RPMs.

Thats all i could suggest

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fuel pump? I've not experienced this (even on my 1998 w/a Supercharger), but I'm guessing it's fuel related.

hey guys... i drive a 96 4r and i know...
its not the ECT or any fuel pumps.... running your engine at that high of RPM heats up the engine and overheats it.... there is this thing that shuts the engine down if it gets too hot or the rpm rev up.... trust me im done some sliding on ice and RPM screw me over with the engine stalling out....

just dont get the RPm that high ever again!

the ect POWER!!! get it POWER
power is the topspeed... your climbing hills on the way to work... you dont need power (ECT POWER) you need torque... that will make up have a stronger pull to pull you up those hills...

and if you read in th owners manual about the ECT power button its used for quick JUMP starts....(off a red light) but just dont use that button hills you need torque

I've never had any issues with the ECT. The ECT keeps the tranny in a selected gear longer and adjusts the shift points higher. It's used when towing or you are climbing a hill and need to stay in the lower gear longer.

i hope this post was a joke because it makes no sense. no car should overheat because you are running it to 5K for a couple shifts. its not like he was running around in second gear at red line. these cars have coolant and a fan ;)

I had a problem with engine light on the other week. It was shifting badly while going down the freeway to work one morning. This was coincidently after an Oil change at the dealer. On the entrance ramp it revved to around 4000 RPM, then abruptly shifted. Traction control light was also on. The trans was doing all kinds of wierd things spuratically.

After diagnosis at the dealer, it ended up to be a green wire in the harness that had rubbed the insulation away. It was at the top of the manifold, in front of engine, on the right side. This was a wire related to shifting patterns for the tranny.

They spliced a new wire in and all is well now, $180 later.

So you might want to take a look at your harness to make sure it is free of this kind of condition, or have a continuity check on this wire. That is what they did... I think they may have moved this wire during the Oil change to cause this condition and hence the problem, but it was a problem that occurred over time and was just exacerbated during during the oil change.

Hope this helps, Let me know if that is the problem.

If in D the engine shouldn't rev to any dangerous point and mine shifts hard at 5200 with no overdrive and ECT on and never an issue.
The redline for the v6 is 5500rpm and has no issues dealing with this but you should't be in a lower gear keeping it there.
