I was troubleshooting an issue on my 97 a while back and bought another ECU, now I'm selling it on Ebay and the question is " will it work with a 5speed".

All I can say is that here is the part number, and it came off a 97 with an auto tranny. anybody know the answer?

yes and no.

Yes if you trick the ecu into thinking that it's in neutral. But you will always have a check engine light on. No matter what!

No, because a auto ecu is strictly for auto 4Runner. There are two types of Ecu. Auto A/T and manual M/T.

Also keep in mind that, if you want to use a manual ecu with auto harness you will need to repin the engine harness. Or swap the engine harness and repin th dash connector. Anyways check out my biuld thread. I own a 97 and there's a lot of info.

Save your self a headache and buy a manual ecu if you own a 5speed. Make sure if you got 97 that the ecu is from and for 97 only. 96-98 all have different pins and connectors so the ecu are not interchangeable

Exactly what is your plan ?

I bought a spare ECU when I thought mine was bad (97 5 speed). Didn't end up being the problem; however, I intend to keep it just in case. Manual ECUs can be tough to come by.

Auto ECUs are easier to find though, so you're probably OK getting rid of it.

The person considering buying your extra ECU needs to write down their VIN number and call the local dealership and ask for the two part numbers that are compatible with their exact VIN #.

On my truck, a 97 4x4 auto limited there are two possible ECU part #s and both are interchangeable.

They will need to check this with the dealer unless you or someone else made a complete chart showing which ECU part #s correlate exactly with which 4runner model types based on the VIN #s.
