EGR Code 71 Problem

Hello All. Thanks for your help in the past. Here's my problem, check engine light reads 71, egr problem. Replaced EGR valve but yet code still comes on even after resetting. Anything else it could be? 1994 3.0, manual, 4x4. Any guidance is much appreciated!:thanks:

Did you test the vacuum modulator and the EGR gas temp. sensor? Its all in the FSM under the emissions controls section. There's also a VSV in there too that you could test. My code 71 a few weeks ago was due to a bad modulator.

10k resister

That code is only a signal that the EGR sensor didn't get the correct feedback. A 10 K resistor plugged into the harness will defeat the code form coming on.
If you truck is running fine- except throwing this code/ 99 cents will fix your issue. Ask My how I know?

Where do I cut the wire and splice in the 10k resistor?
My truck does it too. I've pulled the 15amp EFI fuse (reset), but the CEL later re-appears.

The modulator is merely a filter to keep carbon out of the EGR mechanism valve. My guess is you have the vsv hoses on the egr & fuel regulaor mis-routed.
These hoses get mixed up when the plenom is removed and the pcv is under there.

Its really self explanatory. Once you see it you just put each end in each side of one plug and tape over it.

I'm testing to see if my EGR Temp Sensor is actually functioning. Added pictures of the 10k Resistor to make sure I did it right AND to show anyone else who is a visual learner. If the CEL goes away, I should know that the Temp Sensor was the problem although I'm not hopeful... Checked the resistance on 2ok setting and the meter stayed at "1" so either the sensor is no good OR I had an incorrect reading. Any thoughts??

Wouldn't you want to connect it to the other side of the plug (not the one going into the EGR modulator)? Did this work for you?

Yep. I had a CEL with code 71 and did this. Plug your 10K resistor into the plug that mates with the one shown in the pictures in this thread. It solved my issue.

almost same situation. 94 4runner 3vz-fe. i have been running o% ethanol and having no codes. put 10%ethanol (Standard) and the code comes up. it goes away almost as soon as I fill back up with 0%. Im thinking that it's just old and will have problems.
