Electric Fan for Condenser Install

After buying this 99 4Runner I was intrigued by the amount of space between the grille and the condenser. It looks like it was just asking for an e-fan :tongue1:

The mechanical fan for the radiator has a ton of cooling power. After playing with e-fans for the radiator on my 1988 4Runner for a few years I have decided that there's no reason to mess with the stock cooling system. So the purpose here is to just add a helper fan for the following occasions:

- Slow traffic situations on a hot day to help the A/C
- 4LO driving offroad with low RPMs to ensure a little better cooling
- A redundant system in the very, very low chance the mechanical fan had a problem

I was able to stuff a Spal medium-profile, 11" pusher fan in here. Here are the specs, it is a bit over 900 cfm.

I cut and bent two steel brackets that share the bolt holes with the horns. The only thing I had to disturb was to bend the bracket on the passenger side horn a bit. I added a couple zip ties on the bottom mounting holes but even without them it is quite solid. There's some PVC foam tape on the perimeter of the fan to help seal and cushion against the condenser.

Here's the switch and some wiring. It's a single-speed fan but I wired it up with two settings. HI is always on, tapping into a constant 12V from the inside fuse box (thank you, [MENTION=113939]JerkyDrewster[/MENTION] for the idea to use an add-a-fuse!) The LO setting grabs signal from the wire to the AC compressor. This is the "dummy" setting so you can just leave it alone and the fan will kick on whenever the AC compressor is running. Also a pic showing the wiring running from the cab into the engine bay -- I was leery of disturbing any factory wiring grommets and this seems to work nicely.

Also, thanks to [MENTION=138291]Tinigunner11[/MENTION] for sending me the harness-side of the fan switch, I really needed it!

The switch is a factory rear heater fan switch. I assumed (incorrectly) that the poles were independent. The way it works is that on LO it completes the circuit to one side and at HI it completes the circuit to both. I needed them to be separate, so here was my fix. Snip-a-dee-doo-dah and now they are separate poles.

I didn't snap a picture of the relay but it is bolted to the body next to fuse box under the hood. The fan relay kit from Spal was fantastic -- really heavy duty with quality wiring and an in-line fuse.

If anyone else is interested in doing something like this I'd be happy to sketch the wiring diagram.

Do you have a temp gauge to compare the difference when the new fan is running?

Install looks good, nice work.
 
I did this exact same thing on my 93 Pickup, but just wired to compressor. Worked great to bring down ac Temps on blazing hot days and in traffic. Nice install!

I did virtually the same thing except wired the ground to switch instead of the hot and went with a 10" instead. The fans are inexpensive, got 2 off amazon for about $40. Not sure what to do with the other one, still in a box.

I placed mine over the external trans cooler as an aid to that.

It drops the Trans temps about 10-15 degrees in 100+ weather while idling and about 10 degrees in stop/go or towing situations.

It does nothing for the engine cooling (since its thermostatically controlled) or A/C that I can perceive, the A/C blasts snowballs regardless of this fan.

Wanted to share a story of this e-fan being a useful mod this weekend. We were sitting in the 90* sun in a parking lot, idling with the AC on, waiting for something. I watched my scangauge engine temp creep up from 184F to 192F. Now my engine temp basically NEVER goes above 184F unless it's a slow 4LO uphill climb in the sun. I hit the fan button and in a few minutes the engine temp had dropped back to 184F. Nice

They don't call it HOTlanta for nothing eh?
 
Yeah that's the one bonus for an e-fan. It can put out max speed at idle or very low RPM's while a mechanical fan cannot.
 
Just curious.

Would it be better if the fan is placed on the RH side instead of the LH side since the refrigerant flows from the upper LH side to the lower RH side of the condenser to the dryer then to the evap?
 
This fan is just an extra and doesn’t replace the mechanical fan. No mpg change.

Putting the fan at the hottest part would be best but I expect the condenser does a good job of distributing the heat so I doubt it makes a lot of odds.
 
Do you all notice any mpg improvement?

No. Just a small power bump since it's not spinning a 7 lb heap of metal, fluid and plastic. That's if we are talking about the mechanical fan replacement and not just adding a condenser fan.

Yea, I’m talking removing the mechanical completely.

It was fashionable to do that to my Cummins. It was said to gain around 4mpg. I never did it to mine......

I would have been ecstatic for a 4 MPG bump. It's kinda odd on these 4Runners, I cannot increase the fuel efficiency one bit. All the tricks I did on my past vehicles don't do a thing for this 4Runner. Bigger exhaust, reducing drag, synthetic fluids, removing rotating mass, nothing will get it to change.
 
If I drive mine for work I get around 21 this time of year. But my Saturn gets me 45 so I drive it for work normally.

My work is a 12hr 5-4-5. So I drive my toy on my off stretches

I know this thread is old lol but could you link the parts you used for the harness and switch? It’s hot here in Texas and heat soak in the stop and go traffic is no joke!
