Electrical grounding question...

Once the negative wire is inside the vehicle really there are a lot of options under the plastic paneling. I would probably route it down to the jack compartment and at least try to make it somewhat accessible in case there was a problem or you need to remove the wiring asap. Scrape the paint, nut and bolt it, and put a little dielectric grease over it and you should never have to worry about corrosion.

I already have wires run down to the jack location (rear driver side). I'll look for some grounding screws

Depends on the lights. Your ground and power supply wires should be sized accordingly. The longer the runs you may want to go up a size. Even LED lighting can require a lot of current. As pointed out connections add resistance, the same for long runs so the shorter the runs and the fewest connections in the current path the better. Any body ground in the rear would be good as long as it is clean. If you cant find a good ground in the jack mount area you could probably make a good ground stud with a bolt/nut and a couple of star washers. If that doesn't work I would guarantedd there is a good ground point on the other side where the 12V socket and built in power inverter are (if you have a built in one not sure if that is standard or Limited).
