Electrical Issues - A/C Controls & Turn Signals

How's it going everyone?

I'll Jump right in and say that I am new to 4Runners and am really hesitant with some of the things I ask on here because I see how some people get roasted by other members... But, I am in need of some real help and have searched high and low on here to try and find a solution to my problem but only found posts regarding 3rd gens and not 4th gens.

Here is my rig; 2005 Toyota 4Runner V8 with the limited options/package.

I am having some really annoying electrical problems and it started right after I installed new headlights, taillights and a new aftermarket HU.

There seems to be two major issues right now:

1. My turn signals will not work but my hazards will.
(When I was installing the new HL and TL I tested each one after install and they worked great, I was getting hyper flash since the new headlights have LED's in the turn signals but that was it.) Now they will not activate at all when I hit the toggle up or down.

2. My A/C control panel will not function at all.
(Now I noticed this after installing my new HU... So I went back and made sure all the wires were in the right place and plugged in snugly, but I still wasn't getting any controls back. I even reinstalled the old HU to see if I missed something and it was tied in there somehow but still nothing worked.

Before anyone weighs in... Yes I checked the fuses, I checked the wires and I checked the relays. Well I checked the flasher relay under the fuse box and it looked fine. Is there anything I am missing, should try or do?

I would really appreciate any info.

There are also no codes being thrown that I can tell.

Just going through the forum, I came across a thread with your LED swap hyperflash issue. Although the flasher relay in your fuse box is fine, you need a different type of flasher relay that can handle the LED. I can't remember parts number but I believe it's a European flasher relay. Search it on the forum.

Well... to trouble shoot the hyperflash issue, just re-install the original bulbs, or get a halogen equivalent. At least that rules out the bulb. Its a trouble shooting step...

As far as the other problem... perhaps a damaged connector/terminal/wire during installation. Perhaps someone damaged the HVAC control module itself. If I was at a loss and wanted to throw money at diagnostics I would either take it to the dealer and pay them for one, or maybe throw a part at it like a new control head.

Or you could just have rodents living in ur car feasting on your delicate electrical system...

That's not it. If it has DRLs, nobody makes a LED-compatible version of the 20-pin flasher relay. If it doesn't have DRLs, it's a CF18 / LM449 8-pin flasher relay.

So thats a good point. I did/do have DRL's and they don't make a "LED Compatible" relay replacement. :frusty:

I've read that a few people will solder resistors in line on their existing relays for a fix and that could work.

But my issue isn't with the hyperflash, it's that my turn signals wont work at all.

(Side note; I'm not worried about my feeling getting hurt. I realize its the internet, but I just wanted to preface my question with that bit of hesitation.)

Check the 15 amp IG1 fuse - looks like its the only thing shared between the audio system and turn signal/hazards. If it's blown then blows again upon replacement, unplug the radio before replacing it again.

Just pulled that fuse and saw it was blown! I will have to replace it in the AM, I hope that is it. Thank you for pointing that out. I must have been blind when I pulled them all a few days ago. :thumb:

Undo the dimmer wire on the radio. Or make sure you are using the correct one. Most interior light fail happens when using the wrong dimmer wire

Thanks! I appreciate your encouragement, I will be making one eventually. I want to have a catalog first for most of the things I'm doing.

As to this thread! I found the short! It took some hunting and some trial/error.

In all, it came down to my passenger side tail light. There was a wire smashed by the top nut that tights the light to the body and it was grounding the hot reverse wire. Ergo shorting that fuse and everything tied to it.
