I had the problem too. And to make matters worse, with no resistance, I would forget the brake was on and drive with it still locked. Last car was a Lexus IS300 and wouldn't budge with the handbrake on. Took some getting used to the foot release, out of sight out of mind, don't see the brake, why release it. What can I say creature of habit, or conditioned reflex, maybe I was just and absent minded idiot :)

However this did prompt me to look for ways in which to make the brake hold stronger so I'd notice it on and release it. In reading the owners manual they say to firmly hold the brake pedal down when depressing the parking brake. I wouldn't think the two are interconnected in anyway, but perhaps they are. This really seems to increase the hold of the parking brake. Anyone else notice this?

Anyways its worth a shot if you are having problems with hold. Helped break my first week habit of driving with the brake on.

is it a manual?

if it is

PARK IT IN GEAR

or just find some junker to park in front of an slowly roll back into is so it saves.... just make sure they dont leave before you do...

It's probably an automatic since it's a 2K4 T4R

I don't have a problem with the 4Runner staying put while the e-brake is engaged and its in park.
