Emergency!!!!

400 miles out of town and the PAIR valve assembly decided to malfunction (I think????) Here's the dealio...60 on the freeway, and the engine seems as if it dies. Get off the highway and find that the engine will idle just fine...raise the RPM to just under 2000 and the PAIR valve activates (sounds as if the reed valve opens). Close the throttle and it runs fine...crack the throttle, and no more than 1800 to 2000 rpm and that's it.
FSM says rpm versus temp activates the system, blah, blah, blah. Here's my problem...as said, 400 miles from home, no multi-meter to check things, basic road tools, etc. Limped to Portland, and only shop I found that will give any information, says 180 bucks to diagnose, so on and so forth. Fixing will be hundreds later.
Can the system be bypassewd until I can get to my own shop?
What is best way to fix (provided anyone has any ideas how)

I should have said before...The problem sounds like a rev-limiter when the engine hits 1800 rpm, drops to about nine hundred, then climbs back to 1800 then drops...this is when the throttle is anywhere other than idle

Sorry for your luck, unfortunately I don't know anything about the 3.0's. If you go over to yotatech.com and ask there, you would get a lot more help in a timely manner. There's a lot more traffic on that forum so you're more likely to get helped faster.
