Engine Blown! Thinking Diesel Swap?

Okay, first I know there has been a lot written on this already but I haven't seen anything recent in my search. I tested my rig today and I have high ppm carbon in the cooling system, blown head gasket or cracked head/ cyclinder.

I like the idea of a 1KZTE 3.0L seems like it could be a straight forward swap?

I'm in California :)/:( emissions is it even possible? If not I don't see going any further down this rabbit hole.

I've seen these engines going for around $3600 on eBay and a few other sources. A rebuilt 1GR-FE long block is about $2800 so I thought if I have to replace the engine maybe go for it?

Anyone in SoCal do this swap? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

Turbo diesel is 110hp less?

Yes and 60tq less.

From Wikipedia: "Maximum output is 130 hp @ 3600 rpm with maximum torque of 211 lb·ft @ 2000 rpm. Redline is 4400 rpm. First produced in 1993, it is still used in new model vehicles today"

You could not find anything in the forums because no one was actually silly enough to downgrade their engine.

The problem always arises of getting the new engine to talk to the rest of the chassis without having to gut every onboard system.

Maybe another motor that had hydraboost would work? But I'd imagine that ATRAC/ABS/VSC integration would be an insane hurdle to surmount. Not saying it can't be done... just that the commitment would be incredible.

The topic of motor swaps comes up on occasion... and I really want to see someone with the technical know-how and skills to dig into one and be successful because it'd be really exciting to see someone go the distance.

A 1KZ wouldn't be worth it. Not even a 1KD-FTV. To do a diesel swap in most any modern Toyota, a full half cut is needed... more or less the B-pillars back. Just an engine isn't worth anything at all.

1VD-FTV would be sweet I must say.

A 1UR-FE could also fit based on some rough measurements I took lol but what wins is a 1GR-FE with a stage 2 URD supercharger...no fuss, no hassle..no worries

Thanks, I see how a half cut would be needed. So you have all the wiring and ecu stuff too rather than going through the hassle of trying to source all the components.

I decided to keep it simple and just have the engine rebuilt. Getting a 5 year/50k warranty. Bam!

Got it.

I'd probably sell my 4runner tomorrow if Toyota started selling a v8 diesel. Hell I'd sell my Honda too.

Modern diesels are not the same as the diesels we all lusted over 10 years ago. If toyota brought a diesel to the US that could pass emissions, you would be in here trying to find a way to replace the particulate filter for $1000 less than the dealer, or replace all of the injectors, fuel lines, pump because the high pressure fuel pump shit itself costing you more than $3k to fix.

Common rail diesels are great until they aren't and then they cost you a ton of money. They work in industrial sized equipment because they have fuel filters the size of a roll of paper towels and particulate filters that are serviceable. Neither of which an auto company is going to spend the time engineering if it will make it just past the warranty period as is.

Interesting but how does Mercedes and Chevy produce a diesel power plant that passes emissions? How did they get around the issues you mention?

I had a 2014 Chevy Cruze with the 2.0 TD. Nice engine, great fuel economy, pretty nice car. I traded it when it had 67K miles on it. I was in the shop every ~8k with an emissions problem. It went through at least 3 NOX sensors, a few O2 sensors, EGR valve, DEF tank.

GM has the right idea, they have to get the emissions system right. It was a great commuter car. On extended highway trips it would get about ~54MPG. The service writer I dealt with on all the warranty issues hates diesels because of all the emission relate problems they were having, including the big Duramax's.

I decided to dump it before I started to pay for repairs out of pocket. Every time it was in the shop, they had to have GM troubleshoot it. GM would tell them every time what to replace etc.

The 2.0 was a blast to drive. Tons of torque, and it was pretty darn fast.
After all the emission problems, I swore of turbo charged 4 cylinders. Upgraded to a naturally aspirated V6 in an Avalon as my DD. I've had it since Oct of last year, been to the dealer for one warranty repair, that was a bent door edge guard. Pretty much flawless for 19K miles.

Wow, thanks for that first hand experience. Emission regs are the killer of the diesel engines in the States. Anyone with Mercedes diesel experience? I didn't bring up VW for the obvious debacle but I've heard people sing their TDI praises.
