Why don't you find out what the issue is first?

HG is not that big of a deal to fix, either yourself or the dealer.

If you want a swap just find a 2UZ, or an LSx.

All modern diesels have the same technology if they are in the US. Super high pressure fuel pump/injectors, a diesel particulate filter in the exhaust, a form of catalytic converter, and some sort of urea injection(def fluid). The diesel fuel we have in the US is very “dry” causing lubrication issues with the pump if any slight amount of water makes it to the cam driven fuel pump.

The only thing the dirty vws were missing in this equation was the urea/diesel exhaust fluid/ad blue/etc. We had one of them and it was a great car, but there were many instances of complete fuel system replacement to the tune of $5k+.

That's why I got rid of my TDI, did not want to deal with the HPFP grenading and destroying the fuel system. VW eventually extended the warranty on the fuel system after several pump revisions failed to correct the issue.

Fun car, I miss it now.

WOW - A hood scoop that really is a hood scoop. Central America obviously doesn't have the EPA. Nice rig! I bet it goes farther per gallon that the gasoline versions.

Diesel swap would never pass muster in California.

An LS3 swap might be interesting, but again, you'll never get it to pass inspection in California. These only work if the target vehicle is 1995 (OBD-I) or older.
