i mean compared to jump into a $700 car payment, i think shelling out less than $5k to get an awesome suv going for years would be worth it. my 15 yr old boy get the accord i have, i joke around that my 10 yr old daughter can have the 4runner, but who knows.
i also like doing things to the best of my ability, hense the biting the bullet and just saying F it and buy the short block since i had already gotten the heads redone might as well put in a fresh bottom end and that be the last of it.
Is your son helping you with this project, I hope so it's a great learning experience for him, even your daughter would benefit from the experience?
I started helping my father doing mechanical work when I was around 5 or 6 years old, that was 50+ years ago!

the freeship is for things less than 100lbs, they wouldnt ship the block. its to clunky and weight wise, passes the limit.

Nice find on the sale, I noticed they are also running a sale on complete 1GR-FE engines, part 1900031A20. $15,328 vs the normal price of $25,140 haha.

Been pretty busy lately but i've been antsy to put the block on the engine stand get the party going. Did that and sealed the rear plate with new sealant. Went ahead and bought a new upper oil pan as the engine came off the chains when i was taking it out during removal do to laziness basically. So during the sale i bought the oil pan as well. I'll post updates and pics as i go on with assembly. pretty sure its going to be easier to assemble everything, including the new motor mounts i bought to have a line of sight to line it up with the tranny. Slowly but surely will get it done and hopefully back running within a week or two.

Soon as my kiddo got home from school, we went to wrenching, spent about a good hour and a half on it, explaining to him some components and how things work as we went along. Had him use a torque wrench and he did the head bolt, as well as made him tighten them 180' turn. He struggled a little but he persisted to want to do them all himself.
Literally had one bolt left on the cams, and i freaking dropped it inside the head, so had to disassemble one side, and low and behold the bolt was sitting on my shiny new piston. So put everything back to where me and the boy left off, of tightening the cam bolts, theirs just hand tightened right now.
Tomorrow saturday will probably get alot more done since we have the whole day to work on it.

Your son will remember working on this engine build for the rest of his life, I know this for a fact as I remember the first engine build I did and I'm 66 now and did that first engine build at 12 years old, my father watched everything I did but didn't lift a finger to help, just gave a bit of advice when I asked for it if I wasn't sure of what to do but at that point I had been working beside him on all of our vehicles since I was 6 years old.

i was letting him know the memories i had with his grandfather, as my dad at one point for income started fixing cars in the garage and since i was the older brother i was forced to help. i remember being so annoyed that i had to help all the time, now that i'm older i'm glad my dad was rough on me to learn all that stuff cause its so helpful to have that confidence to fix something.
Told my son for right now it will all seem like gibberish but the more you work on cars, things will start to piece together. my kiddo saw the swap from v8 4runner to now the v6 and like i told him, i have no clue how to work on them. But i'm not scared to with what i've learned throughout the years. a manual, some time, and alot of cursing and it'll get done.

Can't beat father/son (or daughter) time wrenching on stuff. Don't forget to show him the financial side of this project. This is how life lessons are built.

Today once the kiddo got home at 5pm, persisted to connect the chains and mount this bad boy in. once one dowel was lined up was able to wiggle the other one into place, once the motor was level with it. Actually had more trouble with the motor mounts than lining up the tranny. probably took a good 20 mins to line the tranny up. i had the boy tighten all the bolts for the tranny and we continued on with the motor mount. took them both off and lined both of them assembled together and than put all the bolts on. So far everything lined up good, Wiring and hoses and she'll be all done. i say by this weekend as i want the boy to finish all the work, so far hes done most of the major work.

Had it out and swapped the plate in like 25 mins, putting it back in took a little longer. Everything lined up and bolted up good, put the starter in while I was messing with that corner.
Have the intake, wiring, and drive components left to install. Saturday I’m off so I’ll probably finish putting everything back in and let the boy start it up Sunday since he put the engine together.

Went to start it up this morning and having issues getting the starter to engage, just get a click. Checked the grounds
Two behind the heads
One pass side body by ps reservoir
One drivers side body lower under battery
The bracket that bolts to the alternator
And the big ass one to the block.
Took the starter to advance and spun right up, put it back in and still just click.
Charged the battery too just in case
