Engine Head Gasket / Cracked Head Repair (Toyota 3.4L V6 5VZ-FE )

Hey Dudes, [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] created a 7-Part video series on how to remove and reinstall the cylinder heads on the 5VZ engine.

There’s many reasons why you might find yourself needing to remove the heads. You could have a suspected bad head gasket or cracked head. You could have a suspected issue with the head, like a burnt valve, and you need to rebuild the head. It could be because you’re rebuilding the entire engine. Whatever your reason to pull the cylinder heads, this video series will walk you through all the steps necessary to get the job done successfully.

I recommend the YotaShop head replacement kit. It comes with every thing from valve stem seals to exhaust donuts to the knock sensor harness to headbolts.

over the years I've used three. and have a drawer of extras.

watching this series. Very well done. Better quality video upgrades.

When using those inductive heaters. Make sure the exhaust nuts are very cool. If the nuts and studs are hot they expand its possible the maybe caused the nuts to seize ar the ends as well.

After nuts move.... hit them with wd 40 or equivalent to cool them down, which will shrink the expansion and help come off easier....

That's quite the job and even more work to film it. It's the most labor intensive engine repair other than replacing the engine itself. Thanks for taking the time to film it all on top of it.

After my second round,I pulled the exhaust studs out and left the exhaust intact. It saved so much time removing the heads.

That's a decent idea. I do like the fact we had the exhaust manifolds out so we could clean up the sealing surface a bit with a wire wheel.

There is nothing wrong with cleaning the manifolds. I can see studs coming out.

Everytime I tried taking the nuts off the exhaust manifold studs the studs came out too.

I don’t remember if the Yotashop head replacement kit has gaskets for the exhaust manifolds or not…..

I try to heat and cool downs first. A few complete cycles is the best bet. If really rusty, focus that heat on those nuts. Increases the chances of successful removal.
