Engine heat question

Hi guys. Sorry if this is a dumb question but why in the world is my engine/hood so freaking hot? There's a blanket (to reduce sound?) under the hood, but man it's hot under there. The hood is really hot to the touch too. My temp gauge is in the normal range. Is this just a 4Runner thing?

You got to give a description of how hot it is.
How tolerable is the heat? As in, How long can you put your hand on the hood before it gets too hot?

The hood get pretty hot, but not to where you can't tolerate your hand being on it. When you open the hood it's almost like opening your oven with your face a little too close. I've always had Jeeps and never really felt this. The engine is really tucked into 4Runner's bay and my Jeeps had alot of room under there. Maybe not as much airflow? Also, the 4Runner has a thick blanket under the hood (insulation?)

You realize it is summer, right?
Everything is hotter. Running the AC makes the engine work harder, so even more heat.
If your engine isn't overheating, there's no problem.

Well if you are able to hold your hand on there without having to pull away, I would call it good in my books... haha
