No, taping it won't stop the swarf from going into the filter. That's why they make oil filter cutters. It cuts like a pipe cutter or can opener and doesn't remove material.

Sometimes use what ya got educated eye can tell the difference. Pipe cutter IIRC 46 yrs ago first time I used one. :hiding:

Yeah that was my thought too, crank bearings. Once they go they are done and won't move again. Could be why the engine won't crank over by hand or with the starter. Bottom end damage warrants a new engine or quality rebuild.
