Engine Noise

I have about 1,400 miles on my Limited and have noticed a wobbling noise (every 2 or 3 seconds) when the engine is idling. It actually sounds louder in the vehicle than when I open the hood.

If I didn't know better I would guess it is a water pump or pulley/fly wheel problem.

Sound familiar?

Any thoughts?

Mine does kinda sound lumpy almost like a diesel when it's idling now that it's broken in.Runs alot stronger now though and not too worried about it.It's under warranty for the next 95k miles.

If your not sure I'd take it back to the dealership to have a tech look at it for peace of mind. Toyota engines are pretty bullitproof in general but this is a new design with the duall VVT-i.

dont know what the heck that noise is. take it to dealer like harper said. does anyone else with vin # close that have same issues? wonder if later vins, (currently seeing them in 18000 range this month) have this also?
 
Is it a knocking type sound that seems to emanate from behind the driver's side firewall? If so, I have it too. Worse when in Drive than Park. Notice a lower idle RPM as well in Drive.
Here's a new sound for the forum. After a cold start I have a high-pitched whine coming from under the hood when I turn the wheel slightly. All I need to do is ever so slightly engage the power steering and stop and it squeals for a few seconds. Belts checked good with the dealer today. Power steering pump at 5k? Any thoughts? This is so So Gay

Yes, it seems to emanate from behind the driver's side firewall...no other noises...

Mine sounds exactly the same with almost 12K miles on it so far and feels stronger too. I'm not worried either, my warranty is for 125K miles.
 
I have this too. I rode in a Camry the other day and I was surprised how quiet the engine idle was.

Funny you said diesel because I've thought about the same thing when mine idles. I actually like the sound - gives it more of a "big rig" feel.

Do people actually want to be sitting at a red light and NOT hear the engine? I like to know mine is on and using up fuel. If I wanted quiet, I would have bought a hybrid.

Same problem, 4100 miles now...had it sine around 700-800. I mentioned it in the survey that Toyota sent recently about any issues I was having with the car.

Engine noise on the driver's side is ridiculous in the 10 4Runner.
 
is it engine "knocking" from using lower octane fuel. has anyone tried to put in 93 octane to see if it goes away?
 
The reason for the noise is because they went to a full roller rocker engine with this new dual VVT-i. Roller rockers are a good thing and more expensive.A majority of all high performance engines are "Roller Motors"and more valvetrain noise is normal .

This engine has characteristics very similar to that of a diesel. It doesn't spins at pretty low speeds, generally, (5600 rpm redline, I think) and it makes lots of torque down low.

I'm not concerned about long term durability because it is basically a differently tuned 2GR, which is a proven, reliable engine, with a bit more displacement. This means that it has a roller rocker valvetrain (no valve lash as the engine ages), cam housing for the cams instead of placing them directly in the heads, and dual VVT. Hell, the bore is identical between the 1GR and 2GR... just a longer stroke on the 1GR. I'm VERY familiar w/ the 2GR (in warranty particularly). If they are put together right, they are very good engines.

As far as the vibration, it could just be the fact it is a slow spinning, diesel-like V6. Water pump shouldn't have anything to do w/ it as those pulleys are typically very light compared to the heavy crank pulley. Motor mounts would be my next guess. Showing up at 800mi is weird, though. At 1100 or so right now on mine and no issues.

Lol... that's funny I have thought that from day one. Frankly it is a most odd sound, but as harper7 has pointed out we are all under warranty for a long time so no worries here.

This might be one of the few new "bugs" to work out with the new models, but I can say with confidence that it IS a Toyota product, and i wouldnt be worried about it.

Personally I wont be buying one until Toyota:
- Brings back a V-8 option
- Includes XREAS suspension as STANDARD equip. in the Trail Edition
- Works out the bugs....generally speaking.
