Engine Oil dipstick stuck

Hey all:

This seems like it should be a no brainer, but before I dive in I wanted some advice.

I took my 99 4runner in for an oil change today to the dealership. They informed me the dipstick was stuck and to replace it would be appx $205. I laughed and said I would fix it.

However, I get home and that bad boy is stuck on there. I took it to the auto parts store and they were amazed how stuck it is. The yellow grip turns, but that is it, it will not budge to be removed.

So, I don't think I want to try to force it out, at least not at this point until I can get some advice from here.

I imagine I am going to have to order a replacement dipstick tube and dipstick, and install it. if this is the case, can anyone point me in the right direction for finding instructions on how to do this? I have been using Google, but cant find anything.

Any thoughts, suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Those are all the part numbers for everything oil dipstick related. total for those with tax in Va is 37.64 (tax rate is 5.3%) make sure they arent dicking you on prices for parts.

there is a bolt on the along the dipstick tube. undo the bolt and pull the tube up (Yes that bolt is the only thing holding in the tube) Look up T-SB-0384-08. That is for a Landcruiser but same concept.

1. unbolt the dipstick shaft from the block (12mm bolt I think) with the dipstick in it. Some oil may come out. You may want to replace the O-ring on the bottom of the tube (96721-19010). There shouldn't be anything in the way.

2. Pull the dipstick out of the shaft (put shaft in vise, may want to spray PB Blaster or the like in it first).

3. Take pics and post them here.

4. Call the dealership and tell them next time to use a little of their ASE acumen to change the oil, explain to you what happened, and charge you a nominal service fee for extra services rendered.

I recall back in the day when I worked on consumer cars for a living. There were other 'ASE Certified Techs' that seemed stymied by the simplest tasks.

Apparently, nothing has changed.

Thanks all, I knew the price they quoted was outlandish and it could not be too hard to fix, just something I have never done on a vehicle only my lawn mower.
