I have been looking around and I haven't seen anything regarding this, so just wanted to get your opinions.

Toyota rated the new 4.0 liter at 270 hp and 278 lb ft, but I was looking at the engine information and I found that these numbers are obtained using 91 octane fuel. Using 87 octane fuel will get you 258 hp and 270 lb ft.

I saw that Toyota isn't recommending 91 octane fuel, so shouldn't they be advertising the lower numbers? Did anyone else see this?

The big question is WHERE Wiki gets that info from? I don't think that any of the Toyota literature states this.
 
there certainly do seem to be quite a few instances where test-drives/reviewers mention that the new v6 feels "sluggish"… i have to believe that the lexus gx's artificial "exclusive" on the v8 will be short-lived. just sayin'…

I would bet that you will not see a V8 in the 4runner until the midcycle refresh 3 years from now...my guess!!! And i am not even sure if that will ever happen with the way the economy is going and the push for better fuel economy. Maybe Toyota will come out with a turbo/supercharged version or a diesel...yeah, but i just don't see a V8 in the next year or two.

This has been a totally UNEDUCATED guess by me.... :)
 
i hear what you're saying, and i don't entirely disagree. but it does seem to me that if the 4runner's "sister" vehicle came out of the gates with the v8, it's not a stretch to think that it will be back in the 4runner sooner rather than later.

this has been an exercise in wishful thinking by me… :)

My viewpoint comes from seeing repeated advertisements and claims how certain X-brand engine can make V8 power while having V6 fuel economy. You see this all across the different brands. BMW is adding their twin-turbo DI technology on all their engines to make them more powerful without a major hit on the fuel economy of their natureally-aspirated counterpart. Ford is doing the same. Mercedes will eventually head this way, along with Lexus i am sure because having just Direct Injection is no longer class-leading. You can see Infinity is going that same route in their upcoming cars.

The current V6 engines from Toyota are now losing ground to the competition. I love my Sienna 3.5L V6 engine, but you can see that the other manufacturers are stepping up with newer technology and forced-induction.

The push nowadays is fuel economy, fuel economy, and fuel economy. Adding more cylinders and displacement ain't gonna achieve this goal.

Disclaimer...i am NOT a fan of forced-induction on an off-road SUV/truck.

15/20 with premium gas ain't cheap either...and this is with multi-OD gearing 6speed automatic tranny...and it only makes 300hp/330tq. Other manufacturers are making more power with similar fuel economy figures.

The sad part is that even before this 4.6L V8 engine comes out in the GX, it is ALREADY behind the competition's V8 engines! History repeats itself...sure, the 4.7L V8 (in the TLC100 and 4th gen 4runner V8) was a nice engine, but the power output was low compared to the competition back in the day. Take a look at the competition's V8 SUV engines today...they are all making a butt load of power, all above 380 hp and torque! I am not sure what Lexus is aiming at here with the 4.6L V8. Where the GX is priced at, it will be competing against other SUVs with more power. Lexus should have found a way to fit in the Tundra/Lexus LX570 5.7L V8 engine. (True, the GX has actual off-road credentials vs. most of its competition, but lets face it, 99.9999% of GX owners do not go off-road.)
 
Octane absolutely changes performance figures. There is a noticeable difference in my V8.

So you run higher octane all the time? I believe I was told by the dealer NOT to do that...use the octane recommended in the owners guide. BTW: 2008 SR5 V8.

I run premium all the time.It's a cure for the sluggish performance.:driving:Manual says 87 or higher.

I know I started this a while ago, but just found a pdf about the new 1GR-FE. I know the file pertains to the engine in the '10 FJ, but they're the same.

This brings up my original inquiry about the true output of the Dual VVT-i 1GR-FE. Not that it's a huge deal or anything, but just interesting.

There must be some slight differences in the two engines.

As far as I know Wikipedia gets its definitions from the first person that types it in. And who knows where that person gets there info. Just what i have heard.
 
Just to be absolutely clear, the octane is not what makes more power. I just want to make sure people don't get the wrong idea. With modern engines (better sensors, control system, etc), the engine will start to advance the spark timing until it starts to see knock then backs off to find the best operating point. The difference in power comes from altering the tune for the octane, its not inherent the fuel itself. For example, if you put higher octane in you lawn mower it does not automatically adjust to make more power.

Octane rating is simply the rating given to show the resistance to knock. I run premium fuel when I am towing because low speed with high load is the case where knock is most prevalent. Other times, I rarely run premium. Its much more important to use a quality fuel not from walmart and others than it is to use premium.
