EPIC Trip 2016 - CO, UT, ID, WY, MT, SD - Looking for advice, suggestions, etc

Hey guys (and gals),

I wanted to start a thread for my epic road/overland trip that me and my girlfriend are planning for Jun 29th - August 14th.

First, a little background...

I have a 2005 Sport Edition, fully built to handle pretty much anything I wouldn't be too worried to tackle. Here's the build...

V6, 4WD, onboard ARB air, ARB rear locker, full RCI skids, 285-70-16 Duratracs, front CBI bumper, rear CBI bumper with swing-away, Stubbs sliders, Warn M8000, lots of LEDs, rebuilt suspension (ICON, camburg, Toytec), SCS SR8s, TRED Pro Recovery boards, Hi-lift, shovel, axe... I'm definitely missing some stuff, but you get the idea.

I am picking up a Gobi Rack on my first day out towards Ouray/Telluride, so I will also be ready to camp out of the 4Runner via awning and room from ARB.

This will be my second road trip like this: last year in 2015 we did 12 days in Moab and Southwest Colorado. We had a blast the first time around, but I was not able to coordinate meeting any groups so that we could wheel some of the more technical trails in the Moab area. Extremely reluctantly I turned around at the Hell's Revenge trailhead due to being alone and wary of what might happen on a more difficult trail. I hit up lots of the most well known trails, Imogene, Black Bear, Mineral Point, Engineers Pass, Ophir Pass, Top of the World, La Sal Mountain Pass, etc. Now its 2016 and we are coming back for revenge. I would love to meet up with anyone local or in the area, not just for the security of a group, but also to meet some other enthusiasts. I have a decent amount of wheeling experience over the last couple years, both in my 3rd and 4th gen. I wouldn't consider myself an expert by any means but I am pretty confident in myself and vehicle, especially in a group.

I haven't got all the specifics down yet, but here's the general breakdown:

July 29th (evening) head out towards Aurora, CO for Gobi install on the morning of the 30th. The plan is to get the rack installed, grab some food and get back on the road towards Ouray/Telluride by early afternoon. My father and his friend will be out in Ouray during this time for 100s in the Hills, so I would like to tag along Sunday morning (31st) when they hit Poughkeepsie Gulch and maybe end the day with a quick summit to Black Bear before camping for the night.

The following day, perhaps even Sunday evening, the 100s are heading home and I plan on having my father follow me to Moab so he can experience the area for himself (this is also his first legit overloading trip, also has a good amount of trail time in the last few years). My fathers build is stock suspension 100 series landcruiser, but with front bumper, winch, sliders, skids and a locker. He would probably not want to wheel anything too crazy, but would welcome others for a group trail ride. Anyway back on track. On Monday (August 1st) I want to take him on the Top of the World trail and end the day with setting up camp in Onion Creek. The following day (2nd) I am gonna take him to see La Sal Mountain Pass and most likely he will be heading home.

This leaves me with a solid couple days in Moab before we head north towards Yellowstone/Grand Teton. I would preferably like to meet up with a group and run some more difficult trails such as Hell's Revenge, Elephant Hill, Golden Spike, etc. The latest I would like to leave Moab is Friday (5th). My current itinerary plans for doing the White Rim Trail in its entirety, spending the recommended two days on the trail so we don't have to rush and have a chance to explore the area. Of course, anyone who would like to join is more than welcome.

So far, thats the extent of serious planning I have done. After leaving Moab I would like to explore Yellowstone and Grand Teton before heading to Montana to run the Morrison Jeep Trail, Goose Lake Trail and the Shoshone Lake Trail. I am super excited to run the morrison trail as I have not seen many people run this trail, despite its fame. There is another trail called Goose Lake, but reports say that it can get a little sketchy towards the end and its good to be with a group. These are the only trail plans I have made since it is very difficult to find trails anywhere except Colorado/Moab. I have heard there are some trails in South Dakota as well, specifically in the Black Hills, but again its very difficult to get an idea, let alone a map of any trails in that area.

Any suggestions for trails near Yellowstone/Grand Teton and the Black Hills in South Dakota would be much appreciated. I would also love any suggestions for things to do and any cool attractions that are a must see.

Thanks in advance, and I hope I can coordinate with a few members to make this trip even MOAR EPIC!

Cheers!
-Konrad

It's going to be hot in Moab. Might want to check out some trails in the La Salle's for cooler temps.

Yeah when we went last year, it was 105 everyday... I'll take dry heat over humid heat thou. So far my Moab plans include Top of the World, Onion Creek, La Sal Mountain Pass and the White Rim. Hoping local members would like to join in for some more difficult trails.

You could easily do Hell's Revenge or Fins N Things by yourself. They'll just be hot as they're pretty exposed; especially Hell's Revenge. Hit them up in the morning.

Poughkeepsie Gulch is a handful. Have fun on the trip!

I've heard that there is no way around the bigger obstacles anymore, is this true? Something about the wall not being optional anymore.

I just worry, some photos from the trail look like it can get technical.

I believe that is true. Essentially requires lockers. But you're locked, correct?

Yeah I have a rear locker. Plus, I will mostly likely try to tag along behind the 100s which are doing their own event that week. My father and his friend will be in that group as well.

I would recommend porcupine rim in Moab. We did it solo and the top has a great view. Took us half a day. Sounds like you will be in sand flats recreation area for a couple other trails.

Several trails in the black hills. I would hit up Dakota Territory Cruisers TLCA club for info on trails and ask if any of them can take you out. I have been out there several times as my brother lives there and is part of the club. They have an event in a couple weeks. Check their website as it has some trail info. I am not sure what trails to recommend since I usually take my hard core rig.

Nothing on Hell's Revenge or Fins is technical enough to get you in trouble. Just scout anything that worries you before doing it. The descent off of Hell's is probably one of the harder parts. It's rough, broken rock ledges. Totally different than the slickrock of the majority of the trail. But, I did it solo on my second trip to Moab without any problems.

I will be in WY 8/13-8/18 on our way back from Alberta, CA, staying in Cody then Sheridan. We're planning on running some of the back roads and trails in N. WY

You're making me feel a little more confident. Ill have to check it out. Hopefully someone will chime in or I'll see some Toyotas driving who wouldn't mind if I tagged along.

Wow thanks! I'll check it out. Maybe your brother would like to tag along haha. I'm definitely weary of doing anything too crazy.

Wasn't sure which thread I was suppose to post suggestions. In Western Montana, there's Quinn's Hot Springs. Great place to soak the traveling out of your bones.

There's great country up in Western Montana. I remember as a kid driving all the old logging roads and they go on forever. Not sure how many gates there are now though.

Close to Washington \ Idaho border, there's a Cedar Park worth looking at. Again great views.

Haha I'm subscribed to all of them. Thank you!

Just reread it... the cedar forest is near Montana / Idaho border. Not Washington....
