EVAP code and CEL

I am a relatively new member so I hope I am posting this in the correct place and I will try to keep it as simple as possible.

I have a 2002 SR5, auto trans, 3.4L V6 with roughly 260,000KM (approx. 100,000 miles)

a few months ago I got a CEL and EVAP codes. I patched a hole in the fuel tank that was leaking fuel, got a new filler neck and fuel canister and the codes and CEL went away.

a couple weeks ago however I got the CEL and the EVAP codes again (don't have the exact code, sorry), however this time my mechanic is telling me its not what was fixed before but the problem now is the EGR. he said it wasn't an expensive fix and it was something I could do myself.

When I came here and did some searching I found out that the 4Runners didn't have an EGR after '96.

I have attached pictures of what my mechanic pointed to when he was explaining the issue.

MY QUESTIONS TO YOU ARE:

Since apparently it can't be called the EGR since they didnt have them post '96, what is the part that is shown in the pictures.

And could this part be the root of my EVAP and CEL problem??

Looks like the TPS (throttle position sensor to me. As far as I know EGR's were only on 4 cyl 4runners. Not sure what years or if all years of 4 cyl.

Stay away from that mechanic. Go spend $40 on a code reader and find out the codes.

Possibly a bad VSV or a leaky charcoal canister. They can develop cracks. Mine cracked and threw a code. So I pulled it out and hit it with some rtv and I was back in action.

I think on a 2002 the charcoal canister is underneath by fuel tank. You need to find out what code(s) your getting though. Everything is just random speculation until then.

Thank you guys for your input and suggestions. I am going to get the codes read and ill post them here so we have a better idea of what is actually going on to help determine the problem.

I really hope it's not related to the filler neck and canister I replaced a few months ago as that would mean I paid for work that really wasn't done!

Do you remember which codes you had?

Did you test your VSV using a multimeter or 9volt battery?

P0446 is the main one I recall. As mentioned in this post about the EVAP monitor not wanting to run the test.

I think I hooked it up with a 9v.
