NutZac made a thread detailing what he keeps in his in-vehicle first-aid kit a couple weeks ago, which made me wonder what else people keep in their 4Runner.

I think it would be interesting to share what we keep (e.g. first-aid kits, tools, emergency supplies, bug-out bag, etc.) in our 4Runners and where (e.g. drawers, glove compartment, console, visor storage, etc.) and how you keep them organized and secure. We can even add in things that are specifically added for off-roading trips, road-trips, camping trips, etc.. Pictures would be helpful too

I'd start it off, but I don't have much outside of a few tools, towels, camping shovel, and snow removal tool--first-aid kit supplies are on their way.

I keep an umbrella and ice scraper under the rear seat and a first aid kit on the rear seatback.

And crayons/markers/paper to keep the kiddo entertained.

I keep a LOT of stuff in there at all times. I really like those moments when I have the exact thing I need right there. I'll hit the highlights.

-Gotta take care of the wife. Small umbrella and lint roller in the passenger-side door pocket. Mysterious lady stuff in the glove box. A few sugar packets, stable creamer, and a spoon in the center console so the coffee can always be prepared to "perfection" regardless of where it came from. Travel pillow behind the driver seat where she can reach it.

The drawers got a little out of control:

-For the unexpected night spent in a hotel or in the 4Runner or for the buddy you just picked up from a night in jail, a pre-made travel toiletry kit. I have the $5 version from Target/Walmart, but you could certainly DIY it in a ziplock.

-A small bag with a snatch strap, two shackles, and a pair of gloves. Vehicles don't just get stuck way out in the woods. Karma points.

-My D-handle shovel, bow saw, and axe stay in the truck. Not used very often.

-Big first aid kit packed with vehicle accidents and wilderness in mind. Another small trauma kit in the console.

-Helinox-type chair.

-A few bath towels, regular and fancy camp towels. Could go with the toiletry kit. Could dry off a wet dog. Could line the seat after a muddy trail run or bike ride. I seem to always need a towel.

-Antigravity XP-1. I got mine off of Amazon and I've used so much as both a jump starter and cell charger that I don't even care if I may have bought an unwarranted knock-off. If it dies I'll order another within the hour.

-Muck boots/farm boots. They only leave the truck if they're on my feet. There are times when you're not wearing the right shoes for where you've ended up. Have options.

-World's smallest pharmacy in the center console. 1-2 doses each of anti-histamine, anti-diarrhea, Goody's headache powder, Motrin. Small bottle of Tums. Eye drops.

-Travel-size packages of Clorox wipes, Burt's Bees face wipes, and flushable baby wipes.

Forget 4Runners, eveyone should keep jumper cables, blanket(s), a multiway screwdriver, a pair of pliers or vice-grips, and an inexpensive socket set in their trunk or in the gear storage area of their 'runner. The above doesn't take up much room, but I've helped out at least a dozen people besides myself with the kit I keep in my daily driver.

For reference I commute 50 miles a day minimum to get to the nearest town and have hundreds of miles of wheeling outside my door. To get out of my driveway in winter I blow it out with a skid steer. The ladt 12 miles to my house gets closed frequently because the commercial plows cant get through. Busting drifts over the hood of a lifted truck is not uncommon. My truck EDC has been dialed in over ten years and gets used. My job requiresvI be at certain places atvcerain times, especially in bad weather.

Always have a 1/2 tank fuel minimum.
Snatch strap.
Attachment for above. (Currently Gator shackles)
Sturdy Shovel
Axe and saw, chain saw after wind
Highlift with base and wheel strap thing.
Cheap traction mats
Polarized ski goggles (makes driving through whiteout possible sometimes)
Trauma kit
Binos (for wildlife viewing)
Toiletries.
Firearm(s) varies.

I use everything above at least once a year, if not more.

Additionally..

fire makings
gear to walk 25 miles in current weather
Trauma kit

water or something to melt snow

Never use the stuff in the second list, mostly because of stuff in the first list.

I’m new to 4Runners and still need to figure out where to stow everything, but here’s what I kept in my old Grand Cherokee (under the back seats, which had a lot of storage space) and in the spare tire rim. I now need to figure out where to put all this stuff in the 4Runner, and would welcome any suggestions.

Small tool set with sockets, pliers, screw drivers wire cutters, electrical tape and other miscellaneous stuff
Set of adjustable wrenches
Duct tape
Tire inflator
Jumper cables
DeLorme Atlas for the state
US Road atlas
Collapsible shovel
Tow strap
Mosquito netting (to stretch over the window openings when sleeping in back)
Bungee cords
Spare serpentine belt
First aid kit
LED headlight (for me to wear, not for the car)
Spare set of lug nuts (long story)
Spare bulbs
Critter Ridder (to hopefully prevent marmots and other rodents from chewing on things)
Coyote urine (same reason)
Moth balls (same reason)
Toilet paper and Kleenex
Towel and wash cloth
Shop rags

And when going to remote places, 4x4 roads, or snowy backroads, I’d throw a portable jump starter and a “winch in a bag” in the back.

We'd also pack appropriate clothing, food, etc. for where we were going.

Finally, my wife put some “lucky Rat Fink” charms under the back seats, just in case. :hippie:

I carry very little everyday - but have a plastic box (I can barely lift) I throw in back if going anywhere except highway. Been driving for 45 years and about only thing I have ever needed when highway driving are jumper cables and snatch rope - and these have been for others. Few items I have in box that have not been mentioned -

I sold my xj before buying the 4runner - welcome to much more peace of mind:reddance:
