Excited about my first 4Runner & built ideas!!

I can vouch for the 880/906 lift, but there's nothing wrong with getting some 99 tall coils instead. I highly suggest you replace shocks at the same time too, it will greatly improve your handling. I went with Bilstein 5100 because they're designed with work best with a 2" lift, but there are other options out there too. I believe Toyota OEM shocks are cheap and they will perform much better than your old shocks.

Also, some advice to a new owner - try not to get too caught up with mods when there are preventative maintenance items still on the plate! I know it's hard and I'm definitely guilty of prioritizing things incorrectly at times. No point in upgrading already functional brakes when you could be missing out on critical maintenance things like spark plugs, differential oil changes, driveshaft greasing, dirty filters, etc

You are right about getting the maintenance done first. I am 90% on track with getting things done, but I do get distracted by butterflies and flowers and pretty trucks...then SNAP!! back to reality. Timing belt, gaskets, frame, etc.

Oh I’m getting the maintenance items one by one as I go, ordered the timing belt/water pump/thermostat/plugs gaskets/gear oil/air filter/ fuel filter last night. Depending how long my recovery goes from surgery I plan to do the timing belt myself along with everything else.

Just excited to get some mods on it since she sagging supppper low in the back you can see

I am in Mount Juliet. Check out Tennessee 4Runners on facebook. I also have some rear 99 springs for sale. 15k miles on them for $100.

OME 906 in the rear for a 2” lift and 880s in the front. From what I have read these are not good choices if I’m not running armor as it will be a rough ride. And I believe the 880s is around 2.5” lift in the front so I need to re evaluate.

Other option go with 99s all around, believe it gives a 1” lift or so over factory and prob would ride a lot closer to OEM quality. Would I need to replace shocks as well to help with a smooth ride? Which shocks?

There is nothing wrong with using the OME 2906s in the rear with the 99 talls in the front. Several members have this set up and like it.

I ran this for a couple of years but recently swapped the front 99 talls for 2004 Tacoma progressive springs which ride a little nicer in my 4banger.

Sorry to hear about your collarbone.

Regarding the OME 906/880 combo and rough ride – your shock choice will be the deciding factor on how rough your ride is. I just did the 906/880 swap this past weekend, paired with 4Runner 5100s. Ride is softer than my stock '99 setup. The harsher ride feedback I read seemed to relate to if one went with OME shocks when switching to 906/880.

Thanks for the clarification on this and help, this sounds like the set up to go with. I would like to do the shocks at the same time as the lift to help with the ride but might have to put them off for a few weeks. Bilstein 5100s is the plan

Just to make sure I’m understanding, 99 talls in the front of my 01 SR5 would give 1.5” or so lift and the 2906s in the rear would bring it up 2” from factory is what I reading on reviews. Or would the 99s in the front indeed be around 2” of lift?

I think results vary a bit and there are others here with a V6 who would know for sure.

In my case (4 cyl, 5spd, no A/C, no added weight) I was dead level on all 4 corners with 99 talls in front and OME 2906s in the rear. And those measurements were empty with over 25,000 Km of use on the set up.

I think your front will be a bit lower...

I have since gone to a lighter spring in the front for a bit of rake.

How much lift did this 2906/880 set up provide?

Toytec website says 880 is 1.5” on factory weight
Bilstein website says the 2906 are a 2” rear lift.

These measurements sound about right? I also plan to do the 5100s

View attachment 286288Quick update, thanks to the forum here I greased up the driveshaft and the sound is almost completely gone!! Still does it very little, about a 70-80% difference. Thank you! The rear of the front drive shaft had two grease points (5 pumps till a little grease started coming out) the front part of the front shaft only had one grease point (3 pumps). I was in so much pain from my surgery I had to get up but couldn’t resist no seeing if this resolved my noise. I got to thinking does the front part of the front shaft have two points? The remaining sound could be from that second point if so.

Also uploading some pics below (sorry so large) looks like a steering rack leak possibly? Thoughts? Also taking recommendations on the LBJ condition if these need replaced or not. Found sway bar bushings are bad (anyone know part number?) also the sway bar end link bushings look rough? (Thoughts?)

Parts ordered and ready to go on: timing belt, new belts, water pump, thermostat, coolant flush materials, fuel filter, differential oil also transfer case, fresh oil change.

Hoping to get these parts above on in the next two weeks or so depending on recovery from surgery. Also soon after will be the lift mentioned above 880/906s with 5100s for a nice 2”ish lift

You will get lost in a sea of confusion looking at lift and suspension choices. Fyi

The LBJ sometimes show no signs of failure before failing.
You can go on youtube and watch videos on how to check them for excessive play.

Yes, I would say you need new sway bar bushings all around! But at least your end links are still intact. When I bought mine the two fronts were sheared off. I knew I was going to go with a 3" lift anyway so no big deal I needed longer ones (2nd gen rears work well in front with 3" lift). And regarding lifts, I know you just want a small lift but I went with the toytec 3" with the super flex coils in the rear and I'm very happy with the setup. Fits 285/75/16 BFG KO2s easily with no rubbing.

I also read earlier in the post that you're from Franklin, TN. My younger bro also lives there and he loves it. Good luck with the build!

Thank you! Yea I don’t want anything bigger than 2” lift due to all the additional mods you had to make. I’m gonna get the 1” diff drop just to help save my CVs. From the websites it appears I’ll gave a 1.5” front lift and 2” rear lift with the 906s/808s.

Toytec website says 880 is 1.5” on factory weight
Bilstein website says the 2906 are a 2” rear lift.

I've got a 1999, so my height gain was less than the 1.5"/2" stated above. I've yet to do hub-to-fender measurements after my install, but I'd say the expected height gains were achieved. I opted for additional 10mm trim packers in the rear in anticipation of when I'm loaded up for camping. Unloaded, I have a slight forward rake, but i'm fine with that.

Made some progress lately, got the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, tensioner job done this pst weekend. So all of my service is up to date other than my dif/transfer case fluid change which I will complete this week.

Excitedl I got my lift in today, hopefully can get it on this weekend. I got a killer deal on some tires locally 26570s but they won’t be going on until my current tires wear out and I get my level 8s ordered (bronze).

Wheelers off-road had outstanding customer service answering any questions I had plus got my lift out shipped in the same day as I ordered it!! I highly recommend them as the package was packed tight and servile with an invoice including all packaged items. Great company!!

I would change out the lower ball joints just to be safe. That was one of the first things I did to mine when I got it. Looking good so far, and enjoy the process.

I ordered some new LBJa this week to get installed as well as tie rod ends and sway bar end links. They looked a little rough when I installed the lift. The front is a full one inch higher then the back according to measurements. The shocks were sent set up from wheelers on the top perch so guessing they could have been set to the middle perch. I honestly am not going to take the front completely apart again to level this out as it was a pain to get the front lined up to begin with.. Would a 1” rear spacer work? Thoughts? 37” in the front and 36” in the rear

Or possibly see if I can get the next step up rear spring from wheelers? Currently have the 906s in the rear, I believe the next step is 890?

I will be following this thread closely and taking notes. This is almost the exact route I will be taking with my '97. Thanks.
