Exhaust heat shield

Like other's have experienced, my 'heat shield' above the rear axle started smoking so I removed it. I got some exhaust heat wrap, but is it really necessary? Will the heat damage the truck body somehow? I was towing a 2000# trailer when this happened.

Did it seem to have any oil on it or was it loose and contacting something? Would be surprised if it was getting that hot from the radiation coming from the exhaust pipe. How much smoke was coming off?

I've ripped off most of my heat shields as they began to rot and fall off. Have not had any issues and don't plan to replace.

I did the same to mine, as Mike did above. Mine weren't getting all that hot, just make a shit ton of noise. So glad I removed them. It's been about a year, since and no ill-effects.
