I didn’t know about that unit so I just read about about it (MAF calibrator). Seems cool, but also kind of pricey for 8-15hp. I didn’t see a version for the v8 4Runner, but I’m not even sure that would be noticeable on a v8 anyway. However, since I already have the Thorley headers, and plan to do the rest of the system, it may help everything to work better I suppose.
 
The maf calibrator will help wake up your supporting mods. I've been seeing alot more threads on performance upgrades for the v8, and I'm just going to put this here. Mods are in the video description.

Do they supply instructions for programming it correctly? I wouldn’t have a clue how to setup a universal, but if there is good enough instructions it could be a good option. I would think you could really mess up if you didn’t set it up correctly. I also wonder if it would show up with the ODB scanners at the emission inspections they do in certain states like MA, or CA?
 
I got one. It does come with instructions but you need to do some research. You also need a wideband o2 sensor to read the air / fuel ratio. The idea is, someone sits with a laptop adjusting the table with a laptop after you do 0-60 pulls.

Is it rocket science? No. Does it require some time to understand? Yes.

URD sometimes has maps for similar upgrades they can give you but it's kind of a use are your own discretion. They'd probably help you out with programming if you were by their shop.

Personally, I loaded a 'similar' map which was for a V8 4runner and haven't modified it yet. I feel like I can tell when it is doing it's thing though. I believe it only works at above 75% to full throttle by controlling things then. At any other time, there Toyota computer does the controlling and it will not make any difference.

That's my recollection but I haven't fiddled with it in a while.

Did you weld in another sensor bung for the wideband, or just replace one of the exiting ones?

Hey, I just finished installing my Universal MAF Calibrator and wide-band AEM Air Fuel Ratio gauge (plugged into the extra port on the URD Offroad Y-Pipe).

How did you do your tuning from there? Did you plug a Scan Tool into your OBD Port?

Right now I'm:
1) Reading this (http://www.gadgetonline.com/U-Tune.pdf) and noticed that I don't have a scan tool
2) Downloaded this (www.GadgetOnline.com/setup2.zip) on my PC, but haven't done anything with it yet

I've never tuned anything before, but was surprised the MAF Calibrator doesn't have any ports on the actual device.

On the URD MAF, you take off the front cover, 4 screws, and connect with a USB to RS232 converter...to your PC.

If you give URD a call they may have the 'tune' ...you could download it and not do the self-tuning till you get more play time with the software.

Thanks. Just spoke with Gadget - he honestly speaks a different language than I do :). Brilliant, but it's hard for me to follow his advice.

Regardless, he said I'll need a In/Out Scan Tool (another $100ish). I then plug into the scan tool and also plug into the MAF Calibrator (I have a RS232 connector already). I also already have the Air Fuel Ratio gauge installed, so I can watch it real time.

I then start with a "Blank" tune and "follow the procedure" from there. Meaning the 29 page PDF! So far this is far from easy!

I'm starting to wonder if it'll be worth the effort...

Having not actually done any of this myself its all theory here...
I just did the K&N 63 intake tune, that URD sent with mine.

It is worth it, it makes the other stuff you add work...intake/exhaust.

I was under the impression...you hook the PC to the URD MAF via the USB to RS232 converter and that is where you modify the signal to the MAF.

The AFR meter (bung to exhaust) is so you can see the air-fuel-mixture and then modify it to acceptable levels...with the PC hooked to the URD MAF.

I think this is correct. I have the aFe intake and unfortunately Gadget said "I don't have anything for that intake".

I plan on hooking the laptop into the MAF (via USB to RS232 converter) and seeing what happens... :)
 
I know Im reviving an old thread but I qould like to hear updates on those who have been running the URD upgrade.

Are you guys running 87 or 91 gas? Are you guys happy with it? I would like to hear your thought.
