Exhaust leak - where?

haven't climbed under the 4Runner yet but its a 2001 with about 110K miles. Started smelling what I think is exhaust but I don't hear anything like a leak and no CEL or anything. Any ideas on the first place to look. I searched and this doesn't seem common. It has zero rust since I live in Austin

an exhaust leak you will hear the quite loud distinctive ticking sound when the motor is runner. if no sound i would rule out its not a leak. could you have the rear window open? that draws exhaust in while driving.

when did you smell it?

Smelled it after turning of the engine as a gas station and after turning it off when I got home.

If you want to make sure it's not an exhaust leak then have someone pack the tail pipe with a rag while it's running and while you are checking for leaks. It will make a hissing sound. Should be obvious.
