Spring time will force my long overdue exhaust system upgrade, so I ask for forum member's opinions concerning aftermarket items...

About the only item I am set on is an Aero Turbine muffler... I have had them on several trucks in the past and love the performance and (admittedly loud) exhaust tone that they provide...getting a few extra MPG is a plus as well...

My search for aftermarket headers for my 1998 T4R 6cl has only provided me with a Doug Thorley ceramic coated set to the tune of nearly $700 after shipping... Although I do not dispute the reputation of this brand, the cost is about $300 more than I wanted to spend for this component...

Even if I retain factory manifolds for the sake of cost saving (the originals are rusty, but in-tact), I would prefer to replace the y-pipe (seen better days) and if possible, find a high-flow cat converter that would still allow me to pass emissions...new O2 sensors are planned, as the old ones would not likely back out without a fight...

I have a guy that has done my custom exhaust work in the past, so bending tubing and custom flanges, hangers, etc are not a problem...

Thoughts?

putting a high-flow cat on will make it louder than you think. fyi.
I picked mine up off eBay for $60. monsterflow. It's emissions legal if a legit muffler shop welds it in.
you have a y-pipe? are you referring to the crossover pipe and you'd like to go to true-dual exhaust? If that's the case I'm going to refer you to line 1.
 
Putting a full system on an N/A V6 is pretty pointless, I'd just get a nice stainless catback system, and that's pushing it.
 
Just so you know, not trying to rain on your parade here. Trying to save you some money. Figure the $1000 ish you'll save here can be spent on other cool sh*t for your 4Runner.

that's funny, I just signed on to tell the OP I wasn't trying to rag on him. My truck is supercharged and even I refuse to pay $700 for headers. Go for the tundra brake upgrade or some treadwrights or get some tube bumpers and a winch etc..

What are you trying to achieve with the Headers? If nothing more than sound, if you have the change sure, get the DT's. If you're expecting a performance boost, probably not a very cost effective mod...

As far as high-flow cat's go, I know a few guys on here are running them, I am sure a search will yield more info, I really know nothing about them.

Last, with the NA 5vz, you'll want to be careful adding any larger of an exhaust pipe. The 5vz isn't known for power, and once you start losing back pressure it's really not going to help. That said, if you're just looking to get newer materials under there, and have the coin for it sure, why not?

Really, through all of this my thought is get your muffler, and your high-flow cat. Call it a day at that...
 
If you do get the headers, try calling Thorley directly. When I was searching for headers for my 93 Toyota PU. I searched all over online for the best deal and before placing my order I called Thorley with a couple questions regarding their product, and he told me I could order straight through them. The price was the cheapest I could find anywhere. But like everyone else said you really don't feel a difference for the price you pay.

My approach to anything that needs being repaired is to attempt to upgrade from stock for a few extra bucks... Now a "few extra bucks" is different for everyone...

My old man would say $5-$10 is considered a few extra bucks, and still would never spend the extra cash to gain performance or MPG... A couple hundred bucks (IMO) for something I enjoy, that makes my ride run better, and perhaps recoups some of the cost in fuel savings over the life of the parts is worth it...

This is my first Yota and previous trucks were all Chevy's...

I can say with certainty that my old 84 C30 w/454 literally got DOUBLE the gas mileage once I ripped off the stock exhaust for Hedman headers, dual 3" exhaust, with a pair of Aero Turbine mufflers... Granted it went from 4MPG to a whopping 8MPG, but double is double... :)

Even my old 98 S10 Vortec V6 gained a few MPG and better throttle response from a high flow Cat and a single Aero muffler... Yes, the cat/muffler combo with stock y-pipe config was much louder, but the low tone emitted from the exhaust was music to my ears...whereas the 454 exhaust was simply obnoxious (it was hauling around 10,000lb constantly - ambulance body)...

...just wondering if anyone wanted to chime in as to how T4R's fair with exhaust upgrades...

If I was unable to find headers for under $400, or someone with actual first hand experience said they provided no benefit other than looks and sound, I would skip that expense...not worth it...

However, my S10 experience has shown that the high flow cat/muffler combo was a nice upgrade...not too expensive vs the benefits...

Probably stick with the 2.5" pipe, I do not see a reason to jump to 3" or larger...just the added throughput would be satisfactory...

Plan to do the intake mods (deckplate and silencer removal) at the same time...never hurts to streamline intake along with the exhaust...

Exhaust Notes

Well, last week I took the T4R into my exhaust shop to have the Aero Turbine muffler installed and some custom bent pipes to be made.

I chose not to replace the factory manifolds, or the crossover pipe, but upon close inspection it was discovered that my factory converter was toast and causing a rattle, so I ended up springing a few extra hundred to replace that...

As expected, the exhaust is loud, especially when under load and.or going up a hill - but at highway speed mellows out to a low droning note...

When I first had this done I was using the stock intake setup with the only difference being that I was using a K&N filter in the OEM air box... The truck seemed to want to cruise around 2k on the tach...for some reason the amount of exhaust through the muffler at this RPM caused it to be ~6db louder than RPM's only a few hundred above or below that.

So this morning I tackled the intake, hoping that changing the flow rate of the intake would somehow shift the truck's tendency to cruise at 2K, or at the very least change the exhaust sound level when at that RPM...

Time will tell if I achieved my goal with the intake mods vs the exhaust notes, but I do enjoy the extra power and MPG I get with the exhaust being less restrictive...hopefully the intake mods will add to both... I already notice that, with the new intake mods, the truck has a nice acceleration launch feel when it kicks into passing gear now... :)

I live in a county that doesn't require a catalytic converter, we don't have "smog" tests. I have a badly rusted (original? ) cat and bad muffler on my 97 3.4 L VA w/ 275 k on it.
.Exhaust guy recommended no cat and perf. Muffler for $220 installed
Thoughts/suggestions?
