Exhaust system rattle at the spring loaded joint

I have a rattle that appears to be coming from an exhaust system resonance under engine load at about 1100 rpm.

Fortunately, I can observe this at rest by torque braking the engine in gear and believe the spring-loaded flanged joint of the Y manifold pipe to the exhaust pipe is the culprit.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Torque those two puppies down to 32 Ft-lbs and see if her still rattles.

The FSM states that the free spring length should measure 1.6 inches long (no torque) If it is shorter than that, new springs are needed.

Thanks, I'll check the free spring length. I did notice that the joint also squeeks if I push the pipe around with my hands. I wish I had a lubricant on hand that could take the heat like a moly powder. But I think the flex sqeek and resonance rattle are separate issues.

Yea if those springs/bolts are loose, then the donut/gasket gets compromised over time. I think the donut is made of some type of graphite composite.

Those bolts should never come loose if they were torque-ed properly to begin with. The springs act like a lock-washer but their purpose is to provide a constant force on the joint/donut when the pipes thermally expand and contract. The springs can loose the effectiveness (spring constant) but this usually takes many many years.

Did you ever get this resolved? I think I have the same problem. When stopped and in gear, I get a vibration noise under the 4runner which sounds a bit throaty.

Was that the same problem you had? Also, how did you resolve your issue?

I have the same problem with my 2004 V8 lim 4runner 28,000

It happens when stopped in gear, reverse or drive....mostly wit the A.C. on. Will the dealer fix????? does not happen in neutral or park . what did you do?? They claim it's my muffler!!! ---those losers............

I still have not gotten this problem resolved either. Any time I stop at the light I get this vibration. I thought it was the heat shield (which was sitting on top of my muffler), but I had that replaced and I still have a problem.

sorry to bump an old thread but has anyone gotten an answer for this? I'm having the exact same issue. When truck is in drive or reverse and stopped, with AC running, i'm getting a rattling sound. Took it into the dealership and they have narrowed it down to the manifold or cat heat shield so they say. I got the lovely price of $3000 for both front cats to resolve this noise, but off course, no guarantee.

No CEL etc either.

2004 4runner rattle

Yes I found a solution....It was both the inside of the Cat's that were rattling. I had to ride there ass's day and night to find it..Toyota COVERED it unber warrantee. Emissions warranty 80,000/8yrs i think!....free baby......so far no rattle for about 8 mos !
