I need a new exhaust...dealer estimate is around 400 bucks, looking for any suggestions for alternatives which might be around the same price but better or the same but a cheaper alternative - its for a 99 2.7L 4Runner. Thanks in advance for the help.....also forgot to ask, easy job to do myself? If its just undoing a couple hooks and bolts and reattaching I think I can handle it in my garage but I've never done it before so I have no idea. Thanks again.

Gonna need more info. What part of the exhaust needs to be replaced and why? This could be a $50 fix.....or the full $400.
Its just the muffler I believe, the price they quoted includes labor. I haven't seen any rust holes in any of the pipes but the exhaust note has changed. I've never replaced it since new (240k miles). I just dropped the car in for some brake work and because my pedal was sticking and they reccomended it.

If its just a muffler you should be able to have a muffler shop replace it with an OEM style unit for $100-200 out the door. The muffler will be $50-100 and then the labor and any piping will be the remainder of the bill. These guys do this stuff all day long they should be able to knock it out in like 30 min to an hour...that is, if its just a muffler.
BTW make them show you the hole or the exhaust leak dont just take their word...you dont wanna buy parts you dont need.

240...will do, I'll see what the total parts are from the dealer and check out a few places for the install. btw, I checked out your new 5-spokes, looks sick.
jd, found the magnaflow for the 3.4L not the 2.7L - I'll ask in person if someone carries it....checked out borla too but they don't have anything for it.
***quick question, flowmaster has one for the 2.7L tacomas...can I assume it'll work out for the 4runner?

Im just gonna put this out there, the power gains youll receive from a performance muffler will be minimal on a naturaly aspirated 4cyl in a heavy SUV. If you like the noise cool, but every ricer and their friends will try to race you...and its going to be even more high pitched than on a v6-which is bad enough. But its whatever you like in the end.
Yeah I'm not looking for the performance gains or the noise too much - I've kept it stock for 10 years and 240,000 miles. I'm leaning toward the factory muffler and doing the labor myself if its not too complex...just looking to see if there were better options.
I think I am at that bubble where I should question how much money I put into it with repairs, even though its just been oil, brakes, and tires so far and it drives perfectly, the miles are creeping high. thanks for the advice though.

Go find some redneck, hillbilly muffler shop and have them slap a dynaflo on there...going to be able $250 out the door. Negotiate with them. You will know when you found the right shop, because they will be sitting in lawn chairs in the bay with HUGE coppenhagen dips and missing teeth.
