Expected left transaxle repair cost

I have a 1997 T4R with a 3.4 ltr 6 - I noticed the inside end of the left transaxle is developing some play and expect to replace it soon. Anyone know how much this might cost? Is it something for a mid-level DIY home mechanic to take on?

Define play and transaxle.

Do you mean the CV axle?

What are you measuring for play?

Then we should be able to help you.

With the very little information you have provided I am going to take random guess that you need new rear wheel bearings. This will cost you $600-$1,500 depending on who does it and what parts they use. Really though until you tell us what you are talking about we really can't help.

PS - Jaxinmontana, the 4Runner doesn't have a transaxle. Are you talking about the CV shaft?

In that quantity I assumed it would have to be teal. A lot of assuming going on in this thread though...

Ok - was kind of vague before but this is probably the CV joint/axle on the front of the vehicle, for the drivers side of the vehicle, providing power to the front left wheel. The axle has some play where it joints the front diff. Making sense now? Thanks for your feedback!!!!!!

It's a easy job. Unbolt lower ball joint and pry out cv axle. Axles are about $70


Wouldn't worry about play as long as your rubber boots are sealed
