Experience w newer Warn 90287 Remote, Is it Secure & Does it Draw Less Current?

I saw that [MENTION=78273]Jeremy556[/MENTION] mentioned the lower draw of the newer Warn wireless remote in this post http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/160898-bud-built-hidden-winch-regrets.html Looks like [MENTION=6163]phillyd2[/MENTION] asked about specs in the same post but there was no follow up on that point, although there was some entertaining talk about some monkeys putting a winch hook through their windshield, scary.

I had the Trail parked for a week and noticed that the old Warn remote does indeed draw quite a bit, my main battery was down to the last yellow LED on the IBS battery monitor. I am thinking of upgrading to the new Warn wireless remote, but was wondering if people have any experience with two things:

1. Does the new remote draw a lot less current?

2. Is that mount secure? I see that it just goes right on the receiver of the winch, convenient not having the harness, but it looks like it could vibrate off going over washboard or trails?

1. Yes. Haven't put a meter on it, but the draw seems to be negligible. The old one made a visible arc when connecting it to power.
2. Not really. It comes with attachments to tether it. You could probably put a zip tie or something around it. I have mine situated in a way that the remote can't fall out.

Nothing new but I'm again confused. Are you talking about the wireless remote? If so, why would it have any draw at all when the remote is off?

Sitting for weeks is not unusual for my truck and I've noticed nothing.

[MENTION=6163]phillyd2[/MENTION] we are nearing the limit of my knowledge of technical matters like this but I assume the draw is from the unit attached to the winch that is waiting to receive the wireless signal from the hand held remote, I believe there are tiny squirrels in there spinning the power actuator all the time so that the receiving unit is on at all times waiting to receive the signal from the handheld unit to activate the winch?

Hmm. Send warn an email and ask. They have great customer service and now I sort of want to know.

The receiver for the remote (radio) is what is drawing power. I kind of doubt Warn is going to help you out, as they are pretty clear about that it should not be left plugged in, only when in use.

They will at least tell him how much it draws and how it compares to the new one. Funny though, mine has been plugged in for years and never remember seeing warnings not to. Not saying its not so because I hardly ever read manuals and always ignore warning stickers :becky:

Yeah ok I missed that part of the manual [MENTION=78273]Jeremy556[/MENTION], thanks. I also got Ns for "Needs Improvement" in the ability to follow instructions category of my 1st grade report cards, not much has changed since then.

Here is the reply from Warn [MENTION=6163]phillyd2[/MENTION]:

"The transmitter is to be removed when not in use. I think that is what is going on. If you leave it connected it will keep drawing current. The newer 90287 should be easy enough to keep in the glove box… I hope this helps you and we thank you for being loyal to our brand."

No specs.

My transmitter is mounted pretty permanently, on the side of the engine compartment, I guess i can just unplug the harness and secure it somehow when not in use. Cheaper then a new remote system.
