It's not a Jeep but warranty is piece of mind for some. I never buy warranties as I try to buy quality stuff with lots of reliability and durability.
I bought a platinum extended warranty from a Toyota dealership that this web site recommended for $800. I, like quite a few people on here bought it for piece of mind and because I don't have two or three grand laying around in my bank account for those unexpected repairs.
I have a 12 LE with 45k miles on her, I took her in for the 45K service which is a very basic service, only to have the service adviser (who is a buddy of mine) come over to me while I was waiting and told me that two of my shocks were leaking....He walked me into the service bay and showed me the two shocks that had leaked.
He said because the LE has the linked suspension it's going to cost around $2900 with parts and labor.......He then checked my folder and noticed I had the extended warranty and said oh! no problem it's all covered under this, and then said what type of rental car do you need............
He said it was rare to see a car with very little off road use to see the shocks leak.
So am I glad I had the extended warranty? Absolutely and I feel smug that I am $2100 ahead of the game.
~Mechanical Breakdown Insurance covers many mechanical repairs to your car, protecting you from expensive repair bills. This coverage is only available for vehicles with less than 15,000 miles that have been purchased within the last 15 months. A $250 deductible per claim applies. Mechanical Breakdown Insurance is similar to a dealer's extended warranty protection. It's in excess of coverage provided by the manufacturer's warranty.
~EXCLUSIONS: MBI does not include regular maintenance services such as tune-ups, suspension alignment, wheel balancing, filters, lubrication, coolant and fluids, spark plugs, brake pads and lining, brake shoes and tires (includes tire wear and/or tire damage). Breakdown repairs made necessary by intentional damage, rust and oxidation, misuse, or improper maintenance are not covered. Mechanical Breakdown coverage is in excess of coverage provided by the manufacturer's warranty.
Once you've purchased MBI, you can renew it for up to seven years or 100,000 miles (whichever comes first). After a $250 deductible on a covered loss, MBI covers repairs to all mechanical parts of the car (except for maintenance and wear and tear*).
Most of the extended warranty's offered by the dealership are actually underwritten by a third party. I just bought a new trail and I am going to let my factory one run out than pick up an extended one from that third party directly. Like you said, any repair can add up in a hurry and its nice having that piece of mind, especially with some of the electronics on the Limited.
