correct. but then again if you used it, it probably paid for itself.

I try to do the longest duration mileage so if you don't use it, I get a refund pro-rated and use that to buy the next one, so technically I am not paying even the $1350 I paid for mine since I rolled the refund into the new one

now the daughters rav4 and the son's camry, they paid out of their own pocket since it was there first new toyota, so I will advise them to roll the refund on the next vehicle if they trade up before the end of the warranty.

That was not my experience so far. Maybe, it changed in last few years. I didn't have to use my extended warranty on the last T4R, but when I had sold my Scion tC, I was able to return it and get a prorated value.

but even if that were the case, it is still worth it way I see it. I mean the difference is ~10$ a month?

I decided to opt for the 7yr/100k mile warranty through toyota for our 15 Limited. Def worth the peace of mind in case any of the electrical components goes out. It's not the engine I was worried about.

If you do a little research you can buy a platinum extended warranty through a guy out of a New England toyota dealer. Got quoted 6yr/100k for $895 or 7yr/100k for $1025.

Hi which dealer was this? Also, Last I heard you could not buy warranties out of state unless you go to the dealer in person... Is that still the case? I am actively looking for the 8yr 125k plat warranty in Maryland and so far I have been quoted 2400...

I bought two different extended warranties for my 02 Subaru Legacy. At no point in it's life was any repair covered by those warranties. Not the rust/corrosion from being in the snow belt, not hitting an unpainted 4" square curb at 40mph in the rain at night, no extra repair items found during scheduled maintenance, not a single repair. I did have to deal with the recall for head erosion and gasket failure, but that was a dealer cost repair hence not covered by an extended warranty. The warranties were a fat waste of money. The first one was through Honda (where I bought the vehicle used), and the second was directly through a warranty company.

I expect no different experience with my Toyota. Both are products with a quality feel, and strong reputation behind them. I'm sure the electronics may at some point fail, but I expect that to be well down the line and beyond my use for the vehicle (>15 years).

For those who are convinced the Stereo/Nav unit is worth the insurance, remember how stupidly restrictive and barely useful that factory nav is. There's no ability to play dvd's either, not even one full of mp3's. If that goes, I'll be happy to get a replacement bezel, and install a fancy double DIN unit where I can wire the parking switch back to ground so that I can actually program my nav at something more than 3mph! (Yes I've seen the PITA resistor signal box you have to install in the 4Runner to bypass factory nav).

I would say in most scenarios the warranty is not needed but I will give some examples that may help others make the decision

I have a 2006 acura TL, at around 80K miles the timing chain tensioner went up, the extended warranty covered not just the tensioner but a new chain at the same time. this would have been a $2000 service

Wifes 2007 Honda Element, @98k miles the radiator dumped all fluid while driving. By time the check engine light came on the engine was fried. The dealor initially thought something flew up out of the road and busted my radiator but after further inspection a seam blew and caused it to leak... i believe the root was the fan stopped functioning and some sort of faulty heat sensor but not positive this was a few years back. either way they put in a engine with 42K on it and new radiator for free under the extended warranty. the fact that I had all service records and all recomended services performed at this dealer probably helped some...dealer initially wanted $8000 for the service.

2007 Toyota Sequoia, a close friend purchased new and did not get the extended warranty. At about 100K the 4wd was engaged and would not disengage. dealer wanted about 3K to repair and a local shop was 1800... also the motor for the rear air bags went up... he let the air out to drop the rear end and was not able to put it back up...

My 2012 SR5 is my 5th Toyota and I've never purchased or ever needed an extended warranty. The money I've saved would more than cover any number of possible repair scenarios. Number one reason I've been buying toyotas is their excellent reliability and longevity factor. Hasn't failed me yet, but also taking life a day at a time helps prevent speculation and preserve my sanity of what may or may not even happen down the road.

But the OP should do what he feels comfy with.

I generally avoid these and certainly from the dealer. But...I bout the 7 year plan for my '04 Sequoia for a little over a grand. Sure enough at 4 years the switch and motor on the driver's power window went out; $700 in parts and $400 in labor covered with a $50 deductible. I'll be buying them from the same source for my '14 Seq and '15 4R because those parts have not gotten cheaper and they do not last forever. Sold the 04 Seq at 120k miles never had a big issue but a few little ones that the Platinum plan covered.
If I didn't drive Toyota, it would require a second thought but it's cheap insurance if you place to keep the vehicle the length of the contract.

As for adding to the resale value, that's 100% crap in my experience.

My friends buddy was an extended warranty rep for general products. He handled all kinds of stores. He was paid huge and had a big expense account. We would all go out and he would beg to put everything on his tab, and I'm talking high end steak houses. He said the business was way lucrative. 9 out of ten people never use the warranty and its pure profit. He said its the biggest cash cow business. Sure its not the same as for a car.

Ok this is a car related extended warranty story. The controller bought out the dealership I worked at. He built his own self funded extended warranty program along with help from my good friend the service manager. This is where I would get my information. He sold out to the dealer next door after 7 years. Several years later after all the escrowed money was released back to him he ended making out huge more than doubling his profit from the whole ownership of the company. If you have an Audi or other junk and keep it you better buy it though. Those euro cars are wallet sucking pieces of crap.

I purchased these plans months after I had my vehicle from an out of state dealer. This was about a year ago so the people I passed on the info to please let us know if these deals are still valid.

I do think if you are still within your 3 years / 36,000 miles original warranty you can purchase these plans.

In the case of my 2012 Highlander it had been 2 years after I had purchased it when I bought the Toyota Care Platinum plan.

Warranty Question - New 2016 4runner

Hi All. Great forum! I'm a long-time 4runner fan and I'm finally in the process of buying one except I have one question for anyone with current information... My dealership has a 2016 Limited en route to their lot with my exact specs... pretty much loaded (auto running boards, 3rd row) etc. for just under $ 45k (not incl tags, tax). Pretty good price for a new limited from what I could determine by my research here and elsewhere with the exception that the 2016s are just rolling in and no one else has pricing. I'd like an extended warranty since I plan to keep it a long time. I was quoted $1310 for 7yr/100k...not the highest I've come across but not the cheapest either. Anyone else price out something similar elsewhere? Seems like others have bought their warranties from dealerships other than where they purchased their 4runner. Is this still possible? Thanks for any and all advice... hope to be playing outside this fall and winter...Bring on El Nino!
