Extended Warranty (Toyota Extra Care)?

Hey guys, did some searching on this in this forum but wanted some of your opinions on it as well. I have never bought one of these extended warranties before, and have never thought "oh geeze, wish I would have", but I may just have been getting lucky. I read that people are able to find these at different prices. My quote when I was buying my vehicle was $2,826 for the 6yr/125k mi or $2,461 for the 4yr/125k mi. If I buy I'll definitely be doing some calling around for better prices, but is this even needed? Have any of you ever even used one?

Jesus f***. That is some highway robbery. I paid $1,039 for 8 yr/100k mile Toyota Extra Care Platinum.
 
I bought one, mostly because I got it cheap, plus I labored under that "first model year" syndrome. Now that I've spent time reading here, and put >20K on mine with zero issues, I would not do it over.

I showed my dealer what I could buy it for and he matched it immediately. You DO NOT have to buy this from your selling dealer and he knows it. Further, IIRC you can buy anytime your 4R is still in warranty.

are we able to buy these while still under factory warranty? i just bought my 2010 limited used with 26k certified. i opted out of it from the toyota dealer.. but thinking i might..
 
Huge rip off at that price. I will try to find the contact info I used.

A side note, anyone know if it is still worth it on a modded truck (and don't quote MMA).

Yes, and at the prices quoted on my thread, it has to still be within factory warranty. I believe you could possibly still get a warranty, but at a higher cost. Jerry has the lowest prices, and if you were to find a legitimate lower price, he would at least match it. There is another guy (in MA I believe) that I spoke with, but Jerry and I had a great conversation and I decided to purchase from him. Jerry also sells warranties on Ford brands as well.

The Toyota Care Platinum Plus I believe is the name of it covers all of the major systems. Powertrain, A/C, Electrical, etc., etc. It does not cover things like hoses belts, plastics, trims, glass, brakes, and other maintenance items ie timing/water pump and the like. I figure that I have 125k miles of insurance for a little over a grand. If the tranny takes a $hit at 98,000 it is paid for, 0 deductible. And, honestly, of all the parts than can and will fail on the Toyota is the trans.
 
Sorry to hi-jack but does anyone know the procedure for getting the pro-rated value back on a Toyota platinum extended warranty. Bought a 4yr 100000 mile warranty and just traded that vehicle in 20 months and 42000 miles into the warranty.

Thanks for all the info guys! Still undecided, but if I can get it for around 1k, then why not. Never would have thought to go calling other dealers for the $. I'll let you know what I eventually do.
 
When I bought my 4runner the finance guy kept trying to sell me it and I keep telling him no, and everytime he asked he lowered the price. He started at around $2k but I ended up only paying $815 for the Toyota Certified Platinum with $0 deductible. I consider it a small price to pay for a little piece of mind.

Just go back, or call the dealer you did it through, they will need the trade in mileage "certified" just did it on a Van i traded in for the 4Runner!

It's pretty easy. Just call the main number on the website for Toyota Financial Services and say you'd like to cancel the warranty. I went through this same process on a previous Toyota that was totaled in an accident.

So, I'm 20mi away from 1,000 miles 1wk after purchasing the 4Runner.... I love and and just keep driving it everywhere. I think I'm getting ready to start calling around on some prices of the extended warranties. At the rate I'm going, I'm going to run out my 36k mil warranty in my first year of owning the vehicle. Thanks everyone for the help! Before reading all the posts on here, I didn't even know buying from another dealer was even an option.

I personally bought my extended warranty from Troy Dietrich at Greenfield Toyota. His pricing is the same as Jerry Johnson.
 
Getting close to 36k and went ahead and got the 5/125k zero deductible for 799.00 from Troy mainly for peace of mind. Easy to do just emailed him my info and voila. Jerry and Troy were both super nice and professional, went with Troy because I heard back from him first. I tried to haggle but they both said they were only making $100 bucks and considering the discount compared to Toyota financial msrp I took the plunge last week. No taxes or fees at either place and prices were out the door.

After doing the cost per extended year and cost per extended mile calculations, and after realizing how much driving I've been doing lately, I decided to change my 8yr/100k platinum plan to the 8 yr/125k platinum plan (a $360 increase).

This basically allows about 15.5k miles a year instead of the 12.5k miles on the previous plan.

The good thing is that I just need to pay the difference and have the new contract issued after a flat cancel of the old one through the selling dealership. (I went with Troy at Greenfield Toyota again...excellent service). The reason this is possible is the fact that it's been less than 30 days since I received the contract packet for the old one.
