Face gauge overlay?

Hello yall, new to the forum. Recently purchased my daughter her second 4runner. Its a 99 limited 4x4. Fixing all the aesthetic issues. This brings me to a bit of a pickle. Being a cj7 guy myself, I can find any and everything for my ole jeep. Being we have a 87 4x4 yoga truck, an 03 4runner limited 4x4, a 99 4runner limited 4x4 I have joined this forum in hopes of learning in the field of yota's. My sierra is left to google, lol. Ok, down to business. The gauges have some bubbling going on and extensive searching only brings up used gauge clusters for sale or the white overlay that can be installed over the factory cluster. Does anyone know anybody that offers a black overlay, decal, etc. I dont want the white one as I like the factory look. To each is their own, my cj7 is completely stock and while new gauges may be more accurate I am drawn to the era correct and original look. So, is there any way to fix this bubbly issue? Ha ha, well welcome to the forum. I'm not a CJ guy but I've pretended to be while working on my friends rigs. All TJ or JK now though.

I'm surprised to hear you have bubbling in that area, never heard of such a thing on ANY Toyota. I'd say you will have to find a used cluster and swap out the face, unless Toyota services that separately, but I doubt that. Good luck.

I've got a nice size bubble under my gas needle - gets worse in hotter temps - and I've seen a picture of it happening on another 3rd gen on here. I think it was in a thread where the owner did an LED swap.

Say I grab one out of one of the local yards. One yard has 3-4 of these laying around. Its funny because last year we drove to Ohio , purchased 1 owner mint, well close to mint 99 limited 4x4. Daughter drives its for 4 months then rolls it coming up the mtn. I then flew to Indiana and bought this one. Its really clean but has a few small issues . Anyways, will our 4runner display the correct mileage or display the mileage of the donor vehicle? It has 150,000 and I would really like to keep it that way. While I could get lucky (one with like 95,000) I would probably wind up with one that had 300,000 miles. Just curious.

I've never had mine apart, but I've had at least 10 other instrument clusters apart on different vehicles. I was always able to remove the face from the cluster. This would keep all your electronics in place, including the odometer.

It does require great care with the needles.

I'm pretty sure claiming incorrect mileage like that is illegal. You could also consider this, it'll allow you to keep the same mileage. By the sounds what you're dealing with (pictures would help), you could do a simple conversion like [MENTION=69310]zacattack20[/MENTION] did in his build thread (See Post #7)

I have a buddy with the same problem with the gauge face on his tachometer. I was at the pull it yard this summer and took the gauge face out of a 99 to put in there. They charged me like fifty cents for it. Tach and speedo are the same for 96-02, but fuel and temp are different in 01-02.

I'm pretty sure claiming incorrect mileage like that is illegal. You could also consider this, it'll allow you to keep the same mileage. If wanting to keep oem this would be the best way. Just find a used cluster and swap the bubbled the face. It's not too hard to pop off the needle. Mess around with the used one first to make sure you're comfortable popping off the needle that way you don't mess up yours. Then two tiny screws and the face is off and you can swap them.

If you want to keep it oem looking but change something or add a decal or something you could go the way I did in my build thread, which was posted by mattjakobs. It's definitely more costly though. They will make you gauge faces for whatever you can think up. They didn't have any 4Runners when I got mine so they had to get a '98 4Runner cluster first. So if you wanted them for your '99 then they would do it, they would just have to get a cluster first.

Thanks yall, I do not want to mess with my mileage. That was my worry, thanks for sharing that info on just swapping out the face . Yes, its my daughters vehicle ,but I keep all my vehicles factory. I like they way they look, or nothing aftermarket looks better IMO. Not saying a suspension lift or tundra breaks are less than. Just saying I prefer something factory…. To each is their own. Many many thanks… heading to the local parts yard next week. I will attempt to load before and after pictures then. Hey, thanks again folks. I'm really glad I can keep the correct mileage and existing cluster.
