Factory Alarm Question

A recent thread got me thinking about my Factory Alarm Problem. I did a search for my similar issue and found some info on how to reprogram the fob but the steps I followed didn't work.

Here's the issue: I noticed this past summer my factory alarm works to lock and unlock the doors, the button to roll down the back window works and the panic alarm works, but the system won't alarm when you open a door with the it armed. I found this out one day when I gave my girlfriend the alarm fob and I took the ignition key so we could both access the vehicle since I was going on a mountain bike ride while she was going on a run.

When I opened the door with just the key, I was expecting the alarm to go off and it didn't. Then I alarmed the truck with the fob while sitting in the truck, opened the door and no alarm sounded.

Anyone have any idea why the alarm doesn't sound when a door is opened. It seems it might be in some type of "Valet" mode but I don't have a clue how to reprogram it.

Thanks!

Are you sure that you have a security system and not just keyless entry?
Do you have the security light on the dash next to the passenger light? I thought mine wasn't working either and then realized I don't have the flashing light that looks like a truck on the dash.
I guess it's possible to have keyless entry without a factory alarm?

I have the alarm light near the dial to adjust the brightness of the dash lights. It has a little red light on top and something that looks like a tiny speaker below.

I figured it had an alarm because when I test the panic button, an alarm sounds. Would a keyless entry system have a panic alarm but not an alarm for someone breaking into the truck?

I can't answer that one. My remote has a panic button but there is no security anywhere. At least I can't see it.

How much time elapsed before you opened it with the key? As far as arming/testing while sitting in the truck, I know that there is a delay - 60 seconds maybe, says in the manual - before it actually arms after pushing the button on the fob.

The truck was locked and sitting for hours before I opened it up with the key. While sitting in the truck, I might have opened the door sooner than 60 seconds after arming it.

I don't have access to my manual right now, but maybe opening the door with the key also disarms it? Just a theory, have my doubts. One sure way to test: roll down the window, arm it, then give it 5 minutes or so and reach in and open the door.

I think I might have tried that one already but I'll give it a go tomorrow at a more decent hour. Thanks for the suggestions.

I think a while back when I unlocked the front passenger door using the master key, after the factory alarm was already set & doors locked using the key fob, the alarm sounded but if I unlocked it from the driverside there was no alarm. I just assumed it was a feature of the alarm so that it would still let me use the function of the alarm and let me access my vehicle without the key fob.

I'll be checking this out today as well because I did open the driver's door with the key when I was trying to figure out if my alarm was working. Thanks!

Do your dome lights come on when you open your door?
A lot of times the door open/door closed switch that is grounded to the body in the inner door frame will "stick" closed due to corrosion, resulting in your alarm not working when you open a door.
