Factory DRL's re-wired to aux. lights anyone?

I did some searching but couldn't come up with exactly what I was looking for. I'm doing my projector retrofit right now and want to retain the DRL function but, in a different way. The factory DRL's run the headlight bulbs at a low-power setting and return to full power once the headlights are on. This is TERRIBLE for HID ballasts so I can't do that. I want to wire some aux. lights up, using the factory DRL setup. I have a 98 4Runner, canadian made. Has the little grey box under the hood. I'm just not sure which wires to cut and splice to make my headlights still function properly and run those factory DRL's somewhere else. Anyone have any knowledge of this or a wiring diagram for the system?

i have done something like this, although my rig never had DRL, so i just uses a relay wired up to an ignition wire off the column, once the key it turned to the "on" position the lights come on and stay on till the truck turns off. is this kinda like what your looking to achieve?

^ both yes and no. I want the DRL's to function when the truck is ON and the headlights are OFF. When I switch the headlights ON i want the DRL's to be OFF.... and I was hoping to re-use the factory DRL system so I dont have to ad more relays or anything under the hood. (not that it takes up space or is hard, just trying to keep things clean and simple and use what I got...) I may resort to this method if I can't figure out the factory DRL's.

that might be hard to get them to shut off automatically. although then again i am no electrical engineer or master of wiring lol. it wasnt untill about a couple of years ago that i understood what and how a relay is/was (scary i know, casue i have been wiring up off road lights for like 5+years on my rigs). anyhow im sure it can be done im just not sure how to do it. and it doesnt really bother me that i run with both sets of lights at night, the "DRLs" that i have are aimed down fairly low to light up the road surface just in front of the truck (kinda had to do that cause the fog lights are in the same housing and they need to be pointed down and out, the out gets taken care of by the "fluting" in the lens) and so it works great, ive never had any one flash my to dim my lights. the DRLs are bright enough on their own to drive around with just them on if i wanted to.

hopefully someone who know more than the two of us will chime in and tell you how to do this as you want

^ yah fog light DRL's are great but I am thinking about doing some LED work or CCFL angel eyes running off of my DRL's inside my headlights.... so nothing that significantly provides any useful light output, just looks. Someone has to have done this before?!!?!?

I really need a wiring diagram, I should look in my FSM and see if theres anything on the DRL system in there.
