Factory hitch

One more hitch question, I have the factory installed hitch on my 2006 T4R SR5 V6.

I'm considering buying a camper trailer, can I pull one with this hitch?

The manual says not to use a weight balancing hitch with it, but from what I read this is safer, so should I remove the factory installed one to put another one?

Thanks for your help, I don't know anything about what is needed to pull a trailer.

The answer is yes, you can pull a camper with that hitch because it is rated to 5,000 lbs. BUT - depends on what type of camper you are looking at too. I think the Toyota manual says anything over 3,000 lbs they recommend the weight distribution hitch instead of the factory weight carrying hitch you have. Do some searching on this site you will find lots of good info.

Check underneath the truck, if you have the stock hitch you should also have the factory round 7-pin connector needed for trailer lights/brakes, etc. You may need a round 7-pin to flat 4-pin connector if you are pulling a trailer without brakes.

Tell us what size/weight camper you are looking at and you will get a lot of information/advice. I just bought a rockwood roo 19 and I am planning on upgrading the hitch and putting a tranny cooler on my V6.

You can tow upto 5000lbs with the factory hitch and carry 500lbs of tongue weight. You can remove the factory weight carrying hitch and replace it with a HiddenHitch #70779, which can be used weight distributing devices.

In another thread, someone posted that using a weight distributing device on the factory weight carrying hitch can damage the frame. The weight carrying hitch is attached to the rear most cross member.

I don't have any trailer in mind, just want to know what I can get.

Not sure what's the difference between the HiddenHitch and the factory one, and why one can support weight distributing devices and not the other.
Either Toyota is playing it safe, or HiddenHitch is a better design.

The HiddenHitch attaches to the frame rails and the rear cross member. It's a tubular style hitch similar to the V8's hitch.
