Factory Nav Receiver Audio Problem

I have the factory navigation receiver in my '06 4Runner. Recently the audio stopped working and I was wondering if anyone has ever had the same issue. The receiver produces no sounds, even the audio feedback that is normally heard when you touch the screen no longer sounds. One anomaly that I did notice is that if I go to the main audio screen, the balance for the speakers in the car is set all the way to the rear passenger side of the car, but it does not allow me to adjust it and the bass and treble are maxed out, and it also does not allow me to adjust. All of the map functions work fine. The dealer of course immediately said that it's the receiver and have ordered a new one that is currently on back order, which leaves me with no sound in my car until they finally get it. Being someone who works with electronics on a daily basis, however, I am not sure that it is as simple as being a defective receiver and am wondering if it could be caused by a short somewhere in the vehicle. I would appreciate it if anyone has any ideas, or even better, if anyone else has had a similar problem and what the cause was.

I never had that problem. The only glitch I found with the system is the steering wheel controls sometimes lock up. I hope your truck gets fixed soon!

If the new recvr doesn't fix it, you may have a problem in the amp back near the sub. All the fader control and I believe bass/treble and balance is actually done in the amp. The Nav recvr only sends 2 signals (left/right) back to the amp and it is split up there. The amp comes out easily with only 2 plugs so shouldn' t be too hard to check if the Nav recvr changeout doesn't fix it.

Thanks a lot, unfortunately i'm still waiting for the new receiver because it's backordered. I've never realized how mind-numbing driving in a car can be without music.

You might want to go ahead and check the amp to make sure the connections are good there. If it's easy to take out like crozhawk says (I don't have one so I don't know), then it's worth spending a few minutes to see if you can get your tunes back.

I've removed the rear paneling that covers the amp before when I installed my sirius receiver, and it pretty much involves disassembling the entire trunk, so I think i'll wait for the new receiver to come in and let the guys over at the dealer deal with that if the problem isn't fixed. What can I say, I'm lazy..I just wish that I could be lazy and enjoying some music at the same time.

Yeah, so they had my truck over night last week and now say that the problem is the amp and that they have to order a new one. Not to mention the guy that took my truck apart left my map DVD in the other receiver so they are now trying to put their thinking caps on and figure out how to get my DVD out of the receiver that is not powered. Now not only does my audio not work, but my Nav stays on the please insert DVD screen, and nothing else works; including my backup camera.

After all is said and done, I am definitely beginning to believe what crozhawk said and I am thinking it's going to turn out to be a short on the signal wires from the HU to the amp, and not even the amp itself. But I'll let the "pros" figure it out while I drive around in a truck with no radio, navigation or backup camera.
