Factory Running Board Trim Paint

Can the metallic silver trim piece be removed from the factory running boards pictured. I would like to remove them and paint them black. I have tried Plasti-Dip and it is just not tough enough for the job.

Can anyone tell me if these trim pieces can be removed? Can anyone recommend a paint to match the flat black appearance of the factory running board?

Any help would be appreciated!

You should sand them with some 800 grit. Tape and paper the area around and use spay paint. I would start with self etching primer then the the color you want to make them. This way you don't have to take them off or break them by accident.

I removed mine. I did not like the trim hanging down so far. I cut approx. 1" of off the running board to gain a little ground clearance on the bottom of the running board. I did plastidip the edge but as you said it does not hold up.

Mine is older but the ones that were on mine (and removed the first day I had it!) were pretty generic extruded aluminum units. So that silver part isn't trim at all - it's actually the structure the whole thing is made of.

Problem with a spray can is it doesn't have hardener so the durability isn't what it would be if you mixed your own paint with hardener and used a spray gun. It can't, otherwise it would harden in the can. That being said, best spray on out there is SEM Trim Black.

And yea, you could probably wet sand it with 800 first but I would spray on a light coat of primer before applying the Trim Black.

I'm having a hard time imagining what you did there....You mean you made them 1" narrower?

I cut 1" off the outside lip that hangs down the entire length of the running board. The lip is just decorative at least on the running boards on my limited with the chrome trim.

Don't over complicate things. Just tape them with the chrome exposed and rattle can black. If you want to go with quality paint, Rustoleum in wal mart sells for about $5 and will allow a repaint a whole bunch of times.

Sanding it may help some. I like having the option of going back to original if I decide to sell down the road.

We recently bought a SR5 without running boards. Wife decided she want them. Pulled up craigs list and there they were, the exact same boards you have off a 2018 for $100. i luck up once in awhile.

I like your rims. Are the oem, what package do you have...

I just installed those on my 2019 Limited. The plastic end caps slide on and are held in place by a self tapping screw. The board itself is extruded aluminum and the chrome piece you’re talking about isn’t. So it has to slide off. Remove 6 screws and look.

Have you considered "blackout tape"? Also comes textured. Usually in same aisle as pin stripes at auto parts store.

Any update to this... The chrome is part of the solid aluminium step.
