Faded painted cladding

Seeing a thread on here about using a heat gun on the plastic cladding prompted me to get opinions/advice on the painted style cladding. Some of mine is faded to the point that buffing or waxing won't help. What have some of you done for this, short of taking it to a paint and body shop? How difficult is it to remove? The parts that need attention the worst are on the doors and rear quarters. Would it be easier to tape it off and try to paint them or remove them and paint them? Thanks in advance
