Faded Trim or Roof Rack?

Hey everyone,

I'm a long time lurker who finally decided to join. I've used many of the helpful write-ups to do some things that I used to be intimidated by. I did the deckplate mod, cleaned the cabin air fan, changed my transfer case and diffs' oil, did a transmission flush, oil change, changed my fuel filter, replaceed my O2 sensors and bled the brakes after learning about the processes on this forum.

I don't use my 4Runner for off-roading much; mainly just when getting out to fishing or camping spots. It's my daily driver that sometimes tows a (small) fishing boat.

But enough about me. Thanks for all the great advice. I love reading about and seeing the build threads. You guys are hardcore. I've learned a lot of tips for when I want to add some accessories.

I started this thread to recommend a product for making the faded trim on your ride look a lot better.

The product is Forever Black - Bumper & Trim Kit.

Done! Sorry about the shadow/glare. But as you can see it looks near new again. (except where some d!ck rammed into my bumper)

You just clean the bumper with the conditioner and apply the dye via the sponge applicator. It supposedly lasts for several years and is UV-fade resistant. The whole process took maybe 20 minute for 2 coats. I'm going to do my stock roof rack next. Worth the $13 to me.

Just wanted to add that it took less than 1/4 of container to do my back bumper. I'm going to do the rack and sunroof plastic and I'll post pictures when done. I got a compliment at the store about it less than 4 hours after doing it. :trophy:

Overall, I've been really happy that it seems to remove those "hard to get off" wax errors. The wing looks new and I didn't have to mess with paint.

Hopefully it's as durable as the product claims.

Cool let me know how this works especially on the spoiler since it's metal. I used some stuff a while back that was for motorcycles (dont' remember the name of it). Looked great for a while till it rained. Then it dripped all over my windows and basically washed away.

The plastidip is not durable at all.

It's actually not recommended for flat (non-textured) plastic because it can be difficult to put on without streaking. Since it's a dye and not a topcoat spray (like tire black products) it doesn't attract dirt and doesn't wash off. I've washed my car once and it looks the same as after I applied it. (Nothing came off) I use my rear bumper as a step to get things off my roof and I wanted a product that wouldn't scuff off. I debated using a plastic primer and paint but thought that I'd just end up scratching it off. So far, so good.

I'll report back if it starts to fade or scuff.

The black skinny flares on my truck are textured. It's pretty much the same texture as the rear bumper cover. The idea that it's a dye really catches my eye.

I have been looking for something to clean my SR5 flares along with my bumper and roof rack, nothing has worked so far and I even tried using black shoe/boot polish. The plastic didn't absorb the shoe polish at all, maybe this stuff will do the job, I'll look for it in local stores if I can.

Has anyone ever tried Penetrol? Its big with the Jeep crowd and I used it on my Grand Cherokee with great results. It can be purchased at Lowe's and Home Depot.

Yeah then, it should work well. No greasy feel to it. If you put a few coats on, it gets shinier, but always dries hard.

wow that really looks good, i bought some cheap $5 spray at canadian tire that's been working pretty good, but that finish you got there looks like showroom condition

Wow looks incredible, big difference. I have been looking for something to do for my faded trim also. Does it seem streaky at all?? Or is it a pretty full over all coverage??

It really couldn't be easier. Just sponge the surface with the cleaner/conditioner mix and apply a coat or two. No streaks and done in 20 minutes or less. (But let it dry at least 15 minutes to "cure" before getting it wet)

Also, if after it dries you find a spot that you missed and needs to be darker...just coat it again. It mixes in well and doesn't streak. I wish I had found this product earlier.:redbrick:

After 3 months and at least 10 car washes, it is still the same. I am very impressed. I've since used it on a Volvo and a GMC Sierra with amazing results. I wish I had found it sooner.
