Failed inspection b/c of tints on my 14 T4R, but I'm moving out of state

I am permanently moving to Maryland in 17 days, and my New York inspection is due at the end of this month. They wouldn't pass me yesterday at the dealership since I had the driver and passenger front windows tinted. Apparently it's a new law in New York as of this year. I DO NOT want to remove my tints if I don't have to. In Maryland, I believe my tints in the front are legal, and I am planning on getting the truck inspected there sometime next month to Maryland's state inspection standards. Thoughts?

EDIT: There is nothing else that warrants a FAIL in NYS inspection. My truck is in tip-top shape!

is NY that strict that they will pull you over for <1 month over due? i would just not inspect it

i assume this is a 30% vs 35% issue?

Register it non op for now or drive to Maryland and register it a little early. I’d take the chance of getting a ticket for expired tags. Just a fix it ticket I would think. Worse case is to pull the tint.

I wish. NY has an absolute no tint front windows law, where in Maryland you can have 35%.

The windshield and front side windows cannot block more than 30% of the light.

Seventy percent or more of the light from the outside must pass through the window.

They said they were going to fail me when i took mine in for inspection. Got mine new in georgia, and they over tinted the new 4runner.
They passed me in the end hah.

you are of course going to have to register the vehicle in maryland before you can get it inspected in maryland (which will involve an inspection at some point to complete)

so it would have maryland plates or be in the process of getting them when it gets inspected in maryland

Lol vehicle inspections, glad Kentucky doesn't do that nonsense.

I'd drive around without the inspection sticker personally and just pay the fine if necessary before I pulled tint and bowed to the man.

NY has gotten incredibly difficult with tints for inspection. Most places are cracking down, since one shop told me they sent out bait cars to try and fine people. They're actually supposed to take you in for inspection and fail you rather than telling you that you would fail with tints. It's pretty ridiculous, but also the reason I'm not tinting my truck.

They're actually supposed to take you in for inspection and fail you rather than telling you that you would fail with tints. It's pretty ridiculous, but also the reason I'm not tinting my truck.

That's crazy. I did 35% on the front and 20% all the way around on the rears and a 5% strip on the windshield.

All the side and rear windows metered at around 15%

Yep. I heard this all from my local mechanics who I'm friendly with. One of their techs actually got fired over it (a customer was upset that they failed him after making him wait, so naturally punches were thrown).

That's exactly what I had done to mine. The reason why they're so tough here in NY is because there have been situations where an officer cannot see inside the car at night with dark tinted windows and the driver/suspect has been armed. It's understandable for officer safety.

Not sure about NYC,
but in MD you can have a M.D. to write you a waiver for tints if u want to run tints all around below the legal limit.

Mine are 5 all around / 40 front windshield, and never have any issue w inspection / police.

Don't drive around w/o NY inspection, every meter maid and every cop that sees you will bang you out for how much, about $115 a pop? Every one of those cameras on cop cars and plate scanners will flag you as expired, NY is good like that. (unless you have a waiver)

Find a private shop that doesn't care about tints, oh and roll your windows down when its in the shop; they'll typically leave them down.


Stop going to to dealerships for this type of stuff, they'll make a shmuck out of you every time.

Had the truck at the dealership for regular maintenance... figured they would do an inspection at the same time to knock it out. I grew up on Long Island/NYC. It was definitely worse than it is up here in Syracuse. Ended up finding a private place that didn't care and got inspection done/passed.

Here in VA window tint is no part of the inspection but you can and will get a ticket for it.

I don't understand. You are in violation so why don't you just comply with the law and take the tint off. When you move to MD put legal tint back on......

I doubt the law changed from the time you put the tint on until now.

Just a heads up, this is backwards (for Maryland). You must first request the title, then do a full MD inspection before you can register the vehicle. Vehicle inspections in maryland are a one-time deal (emissions are self-serve stations every other year) when you first register a vehicle, but they are incredibly strict (they check alignment, headlight aim, etc.) and tint will undoubtedly be checked. You're allowed down to 35% light transmission, so you can take your chances if it's darker than that.

Get on the inspection and registration immediately -- I almost lost out on the tax waiver because it took forever for PA to send the title within the 60 day period (tax waiver is vaild on vehicles less than 7 years old that were originally taxed at 6% or higher)

Good to know. Yesterday I also spoke to someone from Maryland RMV and was told the same. Title from NY, MD inspection, and MD insurance policy THEN a trip to RMV.
