Failure to drop Gears

Hi all. Been a lurker for a while, first time posting.

The other day I was driving in the mountains and while going uphill i gave it some juice to get my 4 cyl. (auto trans) to drop gears. When I did it made this thumping noise and jerked a bit. Since then I noticed on the freeway while trying to pass someone. I punch it and it thumps and jerks. Ideas?

BTW: I have a 1998 4Runner 4 cyl. 4x2.

Well you could rub it's nose in poop to train it not to dump and be a jerk.

But if it were me, I'd take a close look at the transmission mount, and motor mounts. Just sayin'

Ended up being the Throttle position sensor. very happy the tranny was fine.
